•>■ •». PHiE AT KAIKOURA. HOTEL AND SHOPS DESTROYED. By Telegraph.-Press Association. Kaikoura, March 11. ■ A fire which broke out at 4 o'clock on Sunday morning resulted in the destruction of Shield's' AdelpM Hotel, Messent's billiard room and barber's shop, Airs, Stirling's refreshment rooms, A. J. Whitehead's jewellery shop, and Strang's branch d/apery. P. H. Flowers' establishment was saved by a brick wall and tlie manual fire extinguisher. Whitehead's united loss is about £IOOO. Messent was uninsured and his loss is about £SOO. Mrs. Stirling tiad an insurance of £IOO. The other insurances are not ascertainable. The morning was cabn or the loss would have been mucli greater. The Arc. originated in one of the shops. ANOTHER ACCOUNT. Christchurch, Last Night. At Kaikoura a fire destroyed the Adelphi Hotel; the premises of Messent (tobacconist and billiard saloon keeper), Mrs Stirling (confectioner), Whitehead (jeweller) and Strange and Co. (drapers). The fire started at the back of Messent's and quickly spread till checked by a brick wall between Strange's and Flowers' store. Messent and Whitehead were not insured, the latter estimating his loss at £IOOO. Mrs. Stirling was insured for £IOO, and Strange and Co. for £2500, besides various smaller sums. Shields, licensee of the Adelphi Hotel, had his furniture and effects insured for £l5O. FIRE IN N.S.W. Australian Cable Association, Received March 11, 8.35 p.m. Sydney, March 11. A fire destroyed the principal busiuoss premises at Coolamon, damage being done to tho extent of £20,000.
