The Shipping Board has announced that 31 shins, with a tonnage of 190,400, were completed in January and February. It is estimated that 35 vessels, with a tonnage of 220,954, will be launched in March. Officials believe that the shipping programme is now running smoothly.
A GERMAN CLAIM. FREE ROUTE TO PERSIA. New York, March 10. The New York Times gives prominence to a despatch from German sources stating that the Germans claim to have acquired a direct free route via Russia to Persia and Afghanistan. The Times points out that if the dispatch is true it has an important bearr ing on the situation in Western Asia and possibly in India. A passage through Persia would probably meet -with only nominal opposition.
