Mr. Frank H. Morgan, of the staff ot the Proas Association, Wellington, is at present on a visit to New Plymouth. Mr. Conroy, of Hawera, has been appointed general manager of the South Taranaki Picture Company. Mr. P. Watson returned to New Plymouth from Auckland on Saturday, after spending a month's holiday in the northern city. A Washington message reports the death, from tumor on the liver, of Mr. George von Lengerfle Meyer, who was Secretary for the Navy in the Taft Cabinet. A Melbourne cablegram reports the death of Sir John Madden, LieutenantGovernor. Sir John was 74 years of age and was Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Victoria. An old and highly respected Auckland resident, Mr. Henry Nelson Garland, secretary and treasurer to the Auckland 1 Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, died last week. Mr. T. Cole, of Feilding, has ibeen appointed postmaster at Waitara. He has been in the present office for 14 or lfi years. The Wanganui Chronicle report* the death of Mr. C. Corliss, aged 66. MrCorliss was for forty-eight years in the Telegraph Department, and retired last year. ' Mr. Justice Edwards had a somewhat serious seizure yesterday at Palmerston North, and is confined to his bed, his temperature being very high. His Honor was compelled to leave the bench at Wanganui recently owing to a similar attack. The sudden death yesterday of Mr. Alexander McClennan IMcßae, of Waitui, Inglewood, caused a feeling of very great regret in the district. Mr. Mcßae was in one of his paddocks when he suddenly collapsed and died from heart failure. The family have resided at Waitui for about nine years and are most highly esteemed and respected. One son died Somewhere in France, and another son is now on sick leave from camp. To the widow and her two sous and three daughters the sympathy of a large circle of friends is extended in their sudden bereavement.
The following letter lias 'been reoeived by the father of Lieutenant-Commander YV. K. Sunders, V.C., of Auckland, from the Lords of the Admiralty, through the Secretary: "In confirmation of the Admiralty telegram, I am 'commanded to inform you that a telegram has been received stating that your son, Lieutenant' Commander William E. Sunders, Y.C., R.N.R., was killed on the /4th of August, ICT7, as a result of the vessel on which he was serving being blown up. My Lords of the Admiralty deeply deplore the death of this gallant officer, whose services against the enemy submarines have been of such value to the Empire, and they dpsire me to assure you of their profound sympathy in the loss you have sustained. Since the award of Uie Victoria Cross to your son in recognition of his conspicuous gallantry, consummate skill and coolness while in command of one of his Majesty'n ships: in action, the King has also approved of his appointment to be a Companion of the 'Distinguished Service Order in recognition of his,services in action with an enemy submarine on June VI. This award has not bbon gazetted, but the announcement will be made shortly." The letter added that arrangements would bo made for the i presentation of the two decorations to < in New Zealand.
