ELTHAM.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Kltharn, Marcn 9. At the Eltham County Council meeting on Saturday a letter was received from Wellington stating that the now motor regulations provided for curs hearing a registered number at front and rear of machines. Cr. MeVVilliam said that generally the number at the rear of ithe ear was "pretty miserable'' and hard to distinguish at night. With the, number in the front it would not be so hard. It was lesolved to instruct the county ranger to see that the new regulations were observed. Sergeant V. Horrocks has returned to New Zealand, and will be for a time stationed in camp at Trentham. Young Horrocks left with the Ist Eifle Brigade, and has been away for nearly three years, lie was wounded in the chest and shoulders, but, thanks to y a strong constitution, he is looking and feeling as fit as ever. The site offered to the C.E.M.S. Club by Mr. C, A. tyilkinson is just east of the Argus office, on thfe opposite side. With the ground as a gift the erection of the building is now assured, and will he proceeded with at once. It will be about SO by 40 feet, and when ready for service should prove a boon to the joung men of the town and. district. Mr. T. B Crump (Mayor) presided at Friday's meeting of the Patriotic Com-' mittee. An appeal by a returned soldier for assistance to allow the purchase of a business was referred to a sub-commit-tee —lt was resolved to make April 20 the date for an appeal on behalf of the Y.M.C.A. Auxiliary War Committee, and a letter from Mr. T. H. Penn, Stratford/ forwarding information on the matter, was received with thanks. The efforts of the school committee to gather in funds for the school by way of a picture benefit resulted in the sum of £5 odd being secured. The action of the council in turning down a stfaightoiit vote to the school committee towards the cost of repairing the swimmine baths, and voting a sum towards entertaining visiting firemen has elicited very adverse comment in many quarters.
