Final payments for the Taranaki Futurity Stakes (Harness) of 130 6ovs., IV'; miles, are due on Monday. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") Napier Park concludes to-day. Opunake acceptances are due on Monday. Dividends were very small at Nelson on Wednesday. Mummer changed hands recently for a tenner. Oh! Mummer. Teka met with an accident the other day, and carries .an ugly knee in consequence. Moutoa Queen is galloping well, and may be labelled "dangerous" at Bulls. Orawia is only a handful, but the Gisborne prad is speedy for a few furlongs. 11. Gray got oil' Royal Irish to rich Sir Ralph in the Rotorua Cup, but the former just strolled home. Sir Ralph has been knocking at the door lately, and a win at Te Aroha would be popular. It is reported that the price given for the yearling colt by Autumnus—Ukraine was 1000 guineas." Mr. W. ji. Kcinbcli must lie very game. Portland Lady's breakdown at Wanganui is serious enough to cause her to be sent to the stud. She was a smart hurdler till the handieappers found her out. Who was the well-known Kaimata sport who had his pockets picked clean at the Wanganui meeting? They say his boots were almost worn out when he reached home. For refusing to tell.who gave him a trainer's pass for tiie birdcage, a (lisborne turf patron was ''warned oil'" for two years. That just'about takes the biscuit. Gaxique has been nominated at both Ellerslie and Riccarloti, but will probably race in ,lic south this Easter. Mt. Egmont, who will next race as a gelding, is reported to have tilled out into a nice cut of a horse. Form Up, the hero of the C.J.C. Stewards' Handicap and other races, looked well enough at Wanganui, but was almost neglected in the betting. It is a strange tiling to see a horse of his ability with less than a hundred against his name on the machine. Since then he has changed hands, and has been given to Alex Hall to train. It is odds on that he will carry more than a century when Hall gets him right. This scribe has always held that the place for the stipendiary steward is anywhere but in the stewards' stand. At'a down-tlie-line gathering the other day. Wis Nibs went down to the home turn to view tilings, and when the jocksters sighted the "stipe" they got such'a bustle on that the wrong horse won. A couple of Karnmu casl.-oll's were numbered ar,:ong,l the defunct last week, liaskayne, who has been showing some promise over ihe small sticks, developed tetanus, and had to be shoi, while Witched, while exercising at. Mr. K. Short's training track at Almadaio, dropped dead. Silver and Black, who showed a good turn of speed at Wanganui, is a likely runner in the Maiden Scurry at Greeiimeadows to-day. When the brief cable announcing the result of the Kssendon Stakes came through, there was some excitement over the absence of Desert Gold's name, and the "told-you-so" crowd at once got busy. One prominent trainer gave it as his opinion that she was only a squib, and not equal to the 'Stralian horses, anyhow. What the pessimists thought when tl:ey found out that the mare did not start has to be imagined. It, is reported from Wanganui that a certain Hawkes Bay sportsman, who usually has a decent National horse in Ins stable, was after Collector the other day. There was nothing doing. The got-this-for-me abomination was much in evidence at the Wauevmii meeting, hundreds .vorking the ''blind" side at the ticket and pay-out windows of the tote. It is praeticaily impossible to station a man at each entrance to the tote, but the simple addition of a one-way turnstile to each exit would do away with the nuisance almost entirely. This suggestion >is offered to Tarana'ki clubs for what it is worth. Ilendra won over the fences at the first time of asking, but had nothing much to beat at Napier. It is a wonder some of our promising hurdlers were not sent across to pick up a stake at Greenmeadows. One good turn deserves another, but it does not often get it. An exception in the case of the Wanganui Trotting Club is deserving of mention, however. The threatened clash of dates between the Waikato and Wanganui Trotting Clubs was obviated by the former club gracefully giving way. To show their appreciation of the act, the Wanganui Trotting Club donated a trophy valued at .120 to be added to one of the stakes at the ■postponed Waikato meeting. Racing clubs throughout the Dominion have willingly contributed liberally to various patriotic funds, and the Taranaki clubs have been in the forefront. The latest instance is that of the Egmont Racing Club, which has made a donation of .C2OO to the returned soldiers' "Bi« Push" fmicl. c THE AUSTRALIAN TURF. Australian Cable Association. Received March S, 7.20 p.m. Melbourne. March S. The third day's racing of the Y.R.C. will take place on Saturday and the fourth day on Monday.
