A tew days ago Mr. IT. B. Hormley, jeweller, Lyttelton, mhscd ten gold sovereign eases and two "old wristlet watches. He blamed burglers. nnd placed the loss to debit. On Friday evening ho left about a dozen articles of jewellery on the table in his workshop. On Saturday morning several of them were missing. Burglars were blamed again, but a search amongst small boxes and packing material on the floor showed that the missing articles were safe, and the evidence clearly placed the guilt at the door of a rat or rats. The attraction, apparently, was not the beauty of the jewellery but merely the gum on the label attached to each piece. A gold ring, set with rubies and diamonds, was taken out of its case and shifted from the table to the ground. A gold necklace was carried olf in the same way. Lockets and other ornaments were shifted, and altogether the rats seem to have had quite an interesting time amongst the jewellery. Mr Gnrmley has not yet recovered the ten gold sovereign cases and the two wristlet watches, but now that he has got on to the track of the thieves he hopes to regain all his property. Not so many weeks ago a fine delicately featured lad went up to one of the Y.M.CA. canteens in Prance and looked longingly at a huge slice of bread and a pint mug of tea they provide for a penny. Handing it to him the attendant was told, "I havn't a brown."
