PUKEKURA PARK.

The Pukekura Park Board decided a few weeks ago to establish a fernery and make other improvements to the park. His Worship the Mayor, with characteristic generosity, at once gave his honorarium for the present year ( £lsOl towards the fund. With (his excellent start, the board felt confident of raisthe necessary money. To-day it is 'appealing to the public by holding a gymkhana on the park grounds, and, from the accounts that have been published, the function is sure to be a success. The public have an opportunity of showing their interest in their own beautiful grounds by according their patronage and .supporting the project in every way they can. In these times considerable calls are %eing made for patriotic objects, and some there are who believe the park might well take a back seat until after the war. But this is a mistaken notion. We cannot afford to suspend our civic activities just because there is a war on; we must do justice to them while paying attention to patriotic needs. The park is one of the town's principal features; it is one of its must valuable assets, and it can be made appreciably more so when the projected improvements are carried out. Townspeople have never made enough of the park, possibly because .the board has, in the past, failed to sufficiently enlist .their interest and co-operation. They have not been asked very often for financial help, and we are sure now that thfy are they will liberally respond, all the more so because the board is evincing some life and enterprise. Apart from this aspect, however, to-day's function deserves support because of the meritorious nature of the programme to be provided.
