Newmarket day at the Victoria Racing Club's meeting evoked great interest, partly on account of the presence of the noted New Zealander and partly owing to the openness of the big event. The morning was intensely hot. but a thunderstorm broke over the finish of the Newmarket Handicap. The early racing was particularly good, but a downpour after the Newmarket converted the betting ring into a lake The rain, which was continuous thereafter, spoilt everything. The Hurdle race, St. Leger, and Newmarket Handicap all provided exciting finishes. In the Newmarket Handicap, after the course proper was entered, as usual witli the horses coming head on right across the course, experts could not feci sure which were'the leaders, and' tne struggle from tne distance aroused the crowds to an intense pitch of excitement. liesuits: PINES HURDLES, two mi!c=—Kir,lark 1, Single Barrel ■>,. Colts or geldings, 810; fillies 8.7. 1% miles. —Prince Viridis 1, Bronzetti 2, Broken Glass 3, Also started: Thrice and Dunthulm. Won by half a head, the third horse being four lengths iway. NEWMARKET HANDICAP, a swoopftakes of £25 each, with £2500 added; second horse to receive £SOO, and third .£2-50 out of the stake.—Celigne (9.0) 1, Poitrina (5.7) 2, Wedge (0.7) 3. Scratched: Amanita and Anindis. A good finish Won by'half a length, a neck separating the next two horses. Petn'cia was fourth. Time, lmin.
