ON THE SEA.
REPORTED NAVAL ENGAGEMENT. GERMAN CRAFT MINED. Ans, and N.Z. Cable Assgc. and Router. Received March 3, 5.20 p.m. Amsterdam, March 2. A telegram from Vlieland reports a naval engagement on Thursday night. Violent gunfire was heard off Vlieland during the night. A raft with five German sailors was picked up and other rafts with Germans aboard were seen floating off the coast. There was also much debris seen, THE EXPLANATION. Reuter Service. Received March 3, 5.20 p.m. The Hague, March 2. A small enemy naval craft struck mines off Vlieland. During German efforts to save the crews, a boat capsized. Five survivors have landed. Latest teleprams suggest that a German torpedocr and some minesweepers ran into u minefield and were blown up. THE GERMAN RAIDER. BRAVERY OF SPANISH OFFICER. Received March 3, 5.5 p.m. Copenhagen, March 2. Several British steamers were seen on January 27, when the Igotz Mendi was in the Gulf of Mexico. The German erew prepared to sink the Igotz Mendi, hut Susaeta, the Spanish first officer, tlirew all the bombs overboard. The British steamers passed without suspecting. Susaeta, when court martialled. admitted throwing the bombs overboard, hut declared that he could not allow (he ship to be sunk, while women and children were aboard. Susaeta was locked up till the Igotz Mendi stranded. AN ANCHOR LINER SUNK. New York, March 1. It is reported that the Anchor liner Tiberia was submarined on February 27.
