PRESS ASSOCIATION.

ANNUAL MEETING, Bv Telegraph.— Tress Association. Wellington. Feb. 27. , The animal meeting of shareholders of the Press Ass.nciation'was held this afternoon. Mr. Pirani (chairmani presided, there being thirty-four members present. The annual ropwrt mentioned the death of Messrs. Goihard and Gardner, proprietors of The Woslport Times and The Ruorua Chronicle respectivelv, and of Messrs. Cocks and Marshall (members of the si ali'). The latter was recently killed at ihe front. During the year (m1.0.">1 words of original cables had been supplied to subscribers. These were drawn from the two great cable services imw forwarding news to this side of the world, hence it I had been frequently remarked by visitors that New Zealand' papers gave'a better cable service than any papers in Aus'trslia. The Press Association is able to do this ))y subscribing to both services. Tlic removal of the Eastern Extension Conipany from Wakapaaka to Wellington had not brought the improvement in tlic transmission expected, fur reasons arising outside of New Zealand. The discovery and removal of these obstacles had taken sonic searching, but a great improvement .had been cll'ect.ed, though there was still more delay at times than was desirable. A further alteration was iikely to be made in the system (if landing messages by Pacific cable in New Zealand, which would improve delivery and save time. Allusion was made to the possibility of j the telegraph department having to curtail the hours of attendance at night, in consequence, of the reduction in the stall', which would have the effect of reducing the amount of New Zealand news that could be transmitted, but would not affect I lie cables. The department, however, had assured the directors that nothing would be done till it was positively forced upon it. In consequence of the conditions brought about by the war, several papers had to suspend publication, and the number now on the books of the association was seventy-one. Messrs'. L. Blundell (Wellington) and P. Selig (Christchurch) were re-elected directors unopposed, and Mr. F. Shaw was elected auditor. The report and balance sheet wcrd adopted without discussion. The chairman's address was ordered to be printed and circulated. Wellington was selected for the next place of meeting. M METING OF PROVINCIAL SECTION. Wellington, Last Night.
