~- -nagMONTHLY MEETING. The monthly niectirg of the Tarflnaki Education Board was held vestevdav. There were present- .Messrs It. Masters (chairman), H. Trimble, ,S. (.'. Smith, I'. J. H. White. Messrs. I.'-.'A. Wilkmsuii, M/l\, and E. Dixon were granted leave of absence. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT. The. chairman reported that during the interim he had to make the following temporary appointments:—Kapimi. Miss D. Lawn, assistant; Tokirinw, Mr.' A. Huse, sole teacher; Ihnia, Miss K. O'Brien, soln"tonclier; Mokoia, Mrs. M. Jones, assistant;, Otangiwai, Miss ADromgool, assistant; Okaiawa, Miss Ida Boon, assistant; Otangiwai, Mr. Read, head teacher; Tuna, Miss A. Evans, sole teacher; Dudley, Mr. C. IT. Stephenson, sole teacher; central, Mrs. Waters, fourth assistant. Makaka, Miss C. Murphy, sole teacher; Frankley, Mrs. K. Pain, fourth assistant. He had appointed Mrs. TT. W. Sampson sewing teacher in the Tututawa seliool in place of Mrs. White, who resigned. He had also appointed Miss P. 11. Heal probationer in the West End school, in place of Mr. R. Clare, who refused the appointment. The Alahoe, Musker's and Uruti schools had been directed to elose owing to epidemics. MANUAL AND TECHNICAL REPORT. The Manual and Technical Committee reported recommending:—That Mr. Catton be appointed engineering instructor at Hawera at a salary of £22.5 per annum; that Miss Taylor's resignation of the position of cookery instructress be accepted; that Miss Dean's salary be increased to £OO per annum—to be further increased to £BO as soon as she has obtained a first class City and Guilds certificate in cookery; that applvation be made to the Department for a grant for the purchase of three lathes; that applications be invited for the positioii of junior assistant commercial instructor at New Plymouth Technical College n.t a salary of £80; that application be invited for the position of assistant commercial instructor at Hawera, salary £130; that Miss O'Rorke's salary be raised to £170; that an extension, of time in which to report on the question of agricultural instruction be granted vo the committee, and tV.at for the purposes of this inquiry Mr. White be ad-.l\l to the committee; that Mr. Dean be appointed junior assistant instructor in agriculture at a salary of £IOO per annum and actual travelling expenses; that. the requst of the New Plymouth. High School for assistance in the inalUr of agriculture instruction be acceded tieonditionally on that the Board paying £l4O per annum towards the sahirv "f Hn instnitor, the question to be revised at the end of December next; .thst the question of the purchase of a motor cycle be referred to the. chairman with power to acts; that the instructor be authorised to purchase one No. 21 Planet seed and , manure drill. i Th«. report was adopted TRUANT OFFICER'S REPORT. The truant officer reported: Since the opening of schools I have issued 45 notices to parents. There were a few parents who failed to send their children, those case's have been attended to and the school reports |show satisfactory attendances. In dealing with one parent whose child was not attending -chool, I was informed that the child was to be sent to St. Mary's School, Stratford. which is an unregistered "school. I called on the Principal of the school who infirmed me that the child was to attend the followin? Aveek. I drew the attention of the Principal, also the chairman of the St. Mary's School Board, to the fact that the school was not registered. The chairman stated that he was bringing the matter of registration before the St. Mary's Board at the next meeting. OVERSEER'S REPORT. The overseer (Mr. C, H. Moore) reported as follows: — New Work.—Waitara Technical: This work has been held over owing to the non-arrival of certain material required. The school will, however, be ready for classes after this week. Technical Latrines: This work is well in hand and should be completed in about a week's time. Repairs—Hawera: The work of removal of platforms, cycle shed, and veutilating slides in the infant room has been completed. Bell Block: As instructed, I have agreed with the Bell Block Committee to erect a, concrete tank, the committee to help in the cost of same. Owing to other work we have not yet been able to carry this out, but will he able to do so shortly. Toko: The repairs needed at the residence were noted and material forwarded for same, except the tank. Kaiiniro: Repairs to windows and renewal of all the blinds' were completed and sundry small repairsattended to at this school. Technical Engineering Building: The painting of the roof and other iron work has received attention. Central: The destructor is completed and in good working order. The tarring and sanding at Courtenay Street was also completed. The wood box drain across the footpath is not satisfactory, and I propose to renew this with pipes. Kina: I visited this school in connection with fixing some hyloplate promised, and also to inspect the general surroundings. The school does not belong to the board, and owing to thig the committee, although they have plenty of funds, have not spent a penny on any improvements for the benefit of the children, I met Mr. Simpson, the owner of the property, and promised to bring the matter before the board with a view to giving the committee a lead. There are 24 children on the roll, and if no improvements can be made to this building I would'respectfully suggest that application be made for a new school. The present conditions are not. good enough for children to go through school life in. Midhirst: , Ten blinds were renewed at. this schoolWorkshop: All the tables and woodwork benches are completed, for the Waitara Technical School. A considerable number of desks and sundries have also been turned out, the machines working well. The orders and applications for school furniture are coming in nil the time. We have two men and a, lad carrying out the whole of the joinery, furniture, and general sundries (except joinery for a new school at Matiere and residence at Tatu)- The board will pardon me for expressing the opinion that the amount of work turned out, and also the workmanship, will more tlian favorably compare with any similar institution in New Zealand. K Robinson',, Mdkoia (two weeks); and Miss M. Ma-, Huiroa (one month 1. RESIGNATIONS. The resignations of the following teachers were accepted:—Jlisf.es H. Ji. Dempsev (Central), E. Casey (Hawera), A. W. fieach (Dudley), M. Reeve (Franklev), M. B. Jenkinson (Eltham), E. M. Williams (Makaka), 0. Williams (Mere Mere), 11. Taylor (New .Plymouth Technical College), and Mr. E. '.J. Appleby (Tokirinta). PROPOSED EXCHANGE OF SITES. A reply was received from the New Plymouth Borough Council regarding the proposed exchange of sites in connection with the West End School, and it was resolved that the chairman. Messrs White and Smith be a committee to confer with Mr. H. .T. H. Okey, M.P., and representatives of the Borough Council with a view to facilitating the proposed exchange. HOLIDAYS The following dates were fixed for general holidays throughout the Thursday evening, March 28, to Wednesday morning, April 3. Friday evening, .Tune 7, to Tuesday morning, dune 18. Fridav evening, August 30, to Tuesday morning. September 10. Friday evening, December 20, to Tuesday morning, February 4, 11)19. ' ' STRATFORD TECHNICAL HIGH •: SCHOOL ■ L ' ■ The chairman reported on his visit toWellington when the question of the proposed technical high school at Stratford was brought under the notice of the Department, The members would know that a grant o{ £I7OO was made for the purchase of a site. Regarding the Neiv .Plymouth college he said the Department had apparently made up its mind not to adopt the plan's submitted by the Board's overseer. The Department's plans he ' considered were not as good as those of the Board's, taking into consideration the needs of the future. He had. also made representations regarding schools at Tawhiti and Normanby. It was resolved that the question of the gift of the reserve for a Technical High''School at Stratford be referred to the chairman. t GENERAL. The primary Rchools in the Clifton, lv::nonf, Tara'naki County Council districts in North Taranaki were, granted a whole holiday, if they so desire, on; Thursday. March 14, on the occasion of, the schools championship snorts meeting.) The appointment of Mr. Fredriekson to] the Leppertnn School Committee in place* of Mr. Disrgins was oenfirmed. The action of the Muslcers and Uruti School Committees in closing the schools for a few days on account of an infectious epidemic was confirmed. Mr. White reported on the application for a school at Arawhata road, and it was resolved that the chief inspector be asked to make a report on the necessity of establishing n school there.
