The Senate has adopted General lit Botha's motion granting leave of absence to General Smuts, by 78 to 22. The Nationalists stronly opposed the : motion, declaring that they were not ~ concerned with- what General Smuts was - * doing for the British Empire, but wanted "■* to know what 3ie was doing as a Minister of the Union. General Botha replied Uiat peace might, come at any time. General Smuts would then loo.k aftee '■ South Africa's interests at the pease ' conference- -4; Rebutting the Nationalist complaint, General Botha f-Sid that as nn integral part of the Empire they had to do things which in ordinary circumstances •, they miglit not liave dreamt of doing. l He intended to stand- to the Empire, because South Africa's future depended thereon.
