M A small sailing vessel which arrived in NeW-Plymouth" recently had an exciting and perilous .voyage. 611 the second day after, putting, to.sea, the vessel encountered strong -winds and a heavy sea, which continued for several days, and a bad time was experienced. The vessel sprang a' leak, and the pumps had to be kept - continuously at work from that tme until the destination was reached. The behaviour of the crew throughout their trying experience was 9aid to be splendid. While trying to round North Cape the vessel came right up against a heavy wind, and the attempt to round the'eape ah,d take shelter had to be abandoned. After a general consultation with the crew, it was unanimously decided to endeavor to make the port of destination, and tha-t was achieved to Friday. The vessel lias taken in a lot of water, and the cargo of phosphates which she has on boad, some of which had to be jettisoned, is expected to have been somewhat damaged. A commencement is to be made with-unloading operations this morning. EXPLOSION ON THE HUIA. An explosion caused by a naked light meeting the fumes from benzine occurred on the .coastal steamer Huia about 10 a.m. 6m Friday, while she was berthed at-No. ll.'Qvie'en's Wharf, Wellington. .'-•■■ On ■■ Thursday a full cargo of cases of benzine had been loadud, when • the hatches had been closed. The fumes which usually escape from 'highly inflammable oils such as benzine had accumulated, and a light on the floor of the engine-room, where a member'of the crow was cleaning ig.nited the fumes in the after (and smaller) hatch, causing- an explosion. The hatch covers were blown about 20ft high, and the sound of the explosion attracted a crowd of wharf workers. The smoke from the 'ignition of the fumes looked alarming, and two fire' carts from the Central Station wen; called, but these were not needed, as there was no sign of fire. No one was hurt, and the vessel was not damaged.- An official inquiry will probably be held.
