ALLEGED MANSLAUGHTER. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Core, Fob. 22. Yesterday afternoon Percy George Shave, clerk, of Gore, aged 17, was arrested on a charge of manslaughter for having caused the death of Robert Tinnis Coomer on December 22. Coomer, who was aged 73, was a well known retired district farmer and dredge-owner, who was knocked down by a ear driven by Shave, death subsequently ensuing. Accused was brought before Mr. Young S.M., and remanded. Pail was allowed in £IOO and one surety of £IOO. DEFENCE EXPENDITURE COMMISSION. Palmerston N-, Feb. 22. At to-day's sitting of the Defence Expenditure Commission evidence was given by Captain Trusk (paymaster], ScrgtJnstructor W. Minnell, Sergt.-lnstructor 11. 11. I>avies, and Captain McDonell (commander No. (i Group). 'i'lie latter stated that lie considered all men called up for service should be dealt with by the group officers, instead of being under the dual control of the group officer and Director-General of Recruiting. He thought the group commander should be the military representative in each district before the Appeal Board- He drew attention to the fact that in some districts, where a, major was area officer, he was drawing a higher rate of pay than a group commander who was a group comander and was over the area officer. THE FLOATING WRECKAGE. Gisborne, Feb. 22. A question has arisen as to whether the wreckage drifting ashore -,n the Wainui beach is connected with that recently found near Tiaroa. It appears to be the keel portion of a vessel having a length 1 of from 20 to 30 feet, with barnacles on. It is impossible to make a comparison until the low tide.
