11l the course of his summing up in the West, Coast murder trial at the Supreme Court on Thursday, His Honor, Mr. Justice Chapman remarked that probably no member of the jury, unless he were engaged in a Lank, luid seen bo much money in such a small space as they saw before them in the suit case containing over three thousand pounds. He himself had never seen so much money except on one occasion, when he visited the Sydney Mint. The anjount stolen was probably the largest single sum that had formed the subject of a robbery in the Dominion, exceeding the money involved in those cases of highway robbery they read of in Australia in the old days. Since her war with Spain, America lias successfully colonised Culm and Die Philippines, which she annexed from Spain as an outcome of the war. Professor Trueblood stated in his address on Saturday evening that Cuba was prospering under the new conditions. The Americans had established a strong local government there, withdrawn ail their troops, and the country was smiling and happy. America was trying to do the same in the Philippines, and of the large army left there after the war only 1000 troops were there now, and these were being gradually withdrawn. It was the intention that the people of those islands should fill all the publhpositions necessary to the government of the country, and it was the belief (hat the same happy conditions would follow m in th« oaw of Cuba.
