The racing carnival at Wangauui will be advanced another stage to-day, the Wangnnui Trotting Club's annual meeting being the centre of interest. This year's gathering is only n one-day alfair, and the entries sullered in consequence. It costs a good deal of money to travel horses nowadays, und railway facilities are at their worst. On that account there was little inducement for distant lysituated trainers of harness horses to bring their equines to the meeting. Taraniiki is well represented, and a fair share of the stakes should come tlfis way. Horses of the ciilibre of Sweet Nut, Kate Zolock, Marinoto, Little dowel, Cottage Bell and Gold Boy should make the racing interesting. The Waimate Plains Trotting Club's annual meeting is set down for Easter Monday, April 1, 1918, and the programme is one that should commend itself to owners and trainers of light harness horses. The Cup, 2 miles, is worth 205 sovn, and the Taronakj fupxnty Stakes, li sulai, li'i k V r». The
minor events cater for all classes of horses, and carry wjth tliem generous stakes. Mr. 11. lirinkmai* will attend to the handicapping, and Mr. .1. Tompkins will act as starter. Nominations for seven of the eight events close on Friday, March S, with tlie secretary, Mr. G. A. i [older, lliiwcra. A contemporary liad a few hostile remarks to slip about, a competitor at. I Invent which failed to win a hack race on liia first, day, and then came out and lx-iifc si select licit! in open company on the second day. If it is the horse "Moturoa" guesses, if might be mentioned that a reduction of ."Solus in weight and an increase of three furlongs in distance often make a marked dilference in a horse's showing. It is not always wise to jump at conclusions. "Wayfarer," whose breezy notes are a feature of the rejuvenated Now Zealand Referee, falls into error in staling that Reparation "cut an indifferent figure in Hie Ladies' Purse" at Ilawera. The Gravitation gelding ran a fine race, and finished a close fifth in a field of fourteen, after being badly interfered with. Many observant punters were prepared to see him in a place on the second day. Desert Gold's next engagement is in the Futurity Stakes, run over seven furlongs at Caulfield on Saturday next. Later on she will race at Fleiiiington, being heavily engaged at the V.R.I-. autumn meeting, which opens on March 2. Desert Gold will require to put up 9.13 in the Futurity Stakes, but that should not stop her. New Zealanders have had a good deal to say in the settlement of this event in recent years, Gladsome winning in 1905 and lliotj, while Soultline won in HlOit. A trio of Husbandman's progeny won races at the recent Taranaki meetings. The Wanganui J.C. autumn meeting will be concluded to-morrow, when the Wanganui Guineas and Wanganui Stakes Handicap will be the principal events. The Opunake Racing Club's annual meeting is now engaging attention. The Cup is worth 200 sovs; St. Patrick's Handicap IS", sovs; Hack Hurdles 135 sovs; President's Hack Handicap 135 sovs; and Farewell Handicap 130 sovs. The detailed programme will be found in our advertising pages, and those in - tisrostcd should note that entries for all events tdose on Monday, February 25, at 5 p.m.
