DEFENCE DEPARTMENT INQUIRY. REORGANISATION RECOMMENDED. % SEVERE CRITICISMS Melbourne, Feb. lfi The report of the Commission of Inquiry into the management of the Defence Department states that enormous losses arc likely to be sustained by the Commonwealth owing to the serious mismanagement op the Department. The commission recommends the reorganisation of the whole business affairs of th« department, and calls for the appointment of a board of expert business men to take full control. (fho report severely criticises the policy of appointing men trainetl only as soldiers. It states that in IRIS the Commonwealth proposed to equip afid dispatch three additional divisions to the front, yet although, owing to the alteration of plans, only one was sent, supplies for three divisions continued to pour in and accumulated to such an extent that, notwithstanding issues since made, the ordnance stores were still greatly over-stocked. At the end of August, 1017, boots, jackets, preatcoats and greatcoat materials valued at £2,000,000 was held in stock, being £1.250,000 in excess of requirements. A meeting of Cabinet decided to follow the commission's advice and appoint a board of administration consisting of three business men. PRICES OF DAIRY PRODUCE.
