ELTHAM.
(From Our Own Correspondent). Eltharn, Feb. 15. An old Eltham boy to win the Military Cross recently was Lieut. C. J. Pierce, son of Mr. Jas. Pierce. Young Pierce was a very promising pupil at the Eltliam school and the writer of these lines remembers the boy writing a splendid article on grasses, seeds, fertilisers, etc., in a competition that showed him a keen observer of Nature. After leaving' £l- - his parents went to Ngaere, and Stratford- Lieut. Pieroe's honor was won in the fig'hting round Jaffa, and after his superior ollicers had been disabled he led the men into the Turkish city. An effort is being made to come to some arrangement between the parties interested to select candidates for the Egmont Licensing Committee and thus save the expense of an election. The .Mayor is reported to be setting things afoot in this direction. As at present constituted.the representatives on the committee are residents of Eltham, Kaponga and Manaia. Opunake lost its member through death (Mr. W. C. Dudley) who was succeeded by Mr. W. C Clement (Elthani). ( At Mata this week the hall wa9 well filled on the occasion of a social in aid of the Y.MC.A. funds. Miss Coulter and Mr. Joe Scoon were successful in the waltzing competition—a popular win. Miss Dale supplied the music, being relieved with extras by Mr. James. ""Hie dutties of M.C. were in the good hands of Mr. C. Boothen.
