FATAL ACCIDENT AT PATEA.
A GIRL DROWNED On Thursday afternoon, whilst bathing in the' river above Aitehison's timber yard, .Joyce Hemingway, ' the second daughter of Mr E. Hemingway, proprietor of the Patea Press, aged 13 years, had the misfortune to lose lier life. Tt appears that a number of girls were bathing in the river at this point, when •Kdie Larcornbe and the deceased, who were hand in hand, got out of their depth. Hie current was running out fast, and as neither of the girls could sw\m they were soon in difficulties- In response to the cries of the girls a. man and a boy went to the rescue, but it was onlv Jiossible to get Edie Larcombe to the shore, the other unfortunate girl not being seen again. Yesterday afternoon the body of the ■loooased had not been recovered. The deceased girl was of a particularly bright and lovable disposition and was very popular with everyone. She wan a pupil at the Patea High School, and will ho particularly missed l>y her mates, with whom she was a general favorite.—Press.
