A Melbourne message states that Sir John Forrest has adopted the title of Lord Forrest of Bunbury. The Patea Press reports that Mr. C. Olliver, a well-known business man of Wavcrley, died suddenly on Sunday morning. ' Mr. Donald McDonald, of Stratford, has been appointed manager of the Stratford Mountain House, and takes up his duties immediately.—Post. Sergeant W. E. Hawke, of Uruti, who left with the main Expeditionary Force, has just returned home after three years and four months of service. He is to receive his discharge, The many friends of Mr. A. J. Thompson, LL.B., will (says the Patea Press) regret to learn that he has, under medical advice, decided to retire from practice. < The Egmont County Council yesterday passed a resolution of sympathy with Mr J. Stephenson, of Pihama, an ex-council-lor, in the death of his son, Private W. J. Stephenson, who died of sickness whilst on the voyage Home with the reinforcements. Cr. W. J. R. McNeill has been appointed a representative of the Egmont County Council, on the Taranaki Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, in succession to the Rev. R. B. Gosnell, who has resigned his position. in the hospital and progress report published yesterday the following Tarenakiv.names appear: —Still dangerously ill (satisfactory), J. Kirk. Seriously ill: W. In the official list of officers, noncommissioned officers and men who participated in the Royal honors at the heSinning of the year appears the name of, Lance-Corporal William J. Mercer, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Mercer, Patea- LanceCorporal Mercer received the Meritori* ous Service MedalMr. Stevenson, one of the Canterbury Education Board's agricultural instructors, has been appointed agricultural instructor under,the Auckland Education Board. At the meeting of the Canterbury Board on Friday Mr. Stevenson's resignation was accepted, and \t was decided that he be thanked for l)i» past services. 1 By tlie death of Sir Henry Miller, M.L.C., the number of life memlbers of the Legislative Council is reduced to two. Prior to 1891 all appointments to the Council were made for life. Since September 17th of that year' such appointments have been tenable for seven years only, although any Councillor may he reappointed at the end of his term. The two remaining life members are the Hon. Captain Bnillie, whose appointment dates from March, 1881; and the Hon. C. J. Johnston, the present Speaker, ivho was appointed to the Council in January, ]Sf».
