MILITARY SERVICE APPEALS.

NBVV PLYMOUTH CASES. A sitting of the Wellington District No 1 Military Service Board (Messrs D. (i. A. Cooper, S.M-, chairman, Guy Williams and D. McLaren) was held tit New Plymouth yesterday- Csupu. Walter (military representative) and Major Cox (OX . NV 8 Group) were also present. FACTORY MANAGER'S APPEAL. The first case was that* of Sydney Bennett Hall, dairy factory manager, I'ntti (Mi F. E. Wilson), whose company appealed on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship. Mr. R H. Pepperell, secretary of the company, deposed that the factory manufactured botli butter and cheese, cream having to foe carted to the factory in some instances owing to and distance. It was absolutely necessary to have one expert man in charge. Assistants now could not be depended on, as they were mostly lads or men who won ineligible foi service and had not the necessary experience. As secretary to nine dairy factories, lie could say that it was a time of great anxiety to fill 'any vacancies in factories. The only way to fill appellant's position would be to take away the manager of another factory by offering higher wages. Last year's output was 77 tons cf butted Appellant was a thorough expert, having been at dairy factory work all his life. Appellant was a married man with one child.

Captain Walker: Would not ask for a married man to be sent into camp. If 11 substitute could be got it should 'be for some single man who bad previousIv been exempted. It would be absurd to. send a married man into camp vhile there were dozens of single men in factories exempt. Decision reserved sine die, subject to the usual conditions. Ernest Harry Limmer, fori"- • manager, Waitara road.—This v.- an appeal on the part of the \\S.. Hnad Dairy Company, who were represented bv Mr. T. Buchanan, secretary. Appeal was dismissed, leave being granted till April 30. CANDIDATE FOR' FLYING CORPS. Henry Hine, dairy farmer, Tikorangi, aged 20, appealed on the ground of public interest. He deposed that be had passed Ifor the Flying Corps, and if he did not get through was willing to go into campThe appeal was accordingly withdrawn, leave being granted as requested. AN OKAU APPEAL. Arthur William Blanchard, farmer, Okan, whose appeal bad been previously adjourned, deposed that the position was exactly the same as when he gave evidence. His brother was still away at the front. To the chairman: He had taken no steps to get a man since before the Board last. He had no accommodation on the place for a married man, and single men would he 'hard to get. Decision reserved sine die. A MATAU CASE. Francis Hearn Mills, farmer Matau (Mr. Bennett), appealed on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship. He deposed that he was a sheep and cattle farmer, store keeper and postmaster at Matau, "28 miles from Inglewood. He wbb aged 40, married, without children. He owned farms of 300 acres l.i-p. and 200 acres freehold, two miles apart. He and Ms wife were the only ones on the property. His wife looked after the post office and store and appellant looked after the farm. He bad given the property to several agents to dispose of, but had only one offer to exchange- Was quite willing to go if he could only get valuation for his property. Captain Walker bad no questions to nsk, remarking that hundreds of single men bad been exempted on similar grounds. Decision reserved pine die. A NEW PLYMOUTH APPEAL. Albert William MoEwen, dairy farmer. Carrington road, stated that since his previous appeal his two brothers on the Durham road had gone into camp and a manager had been installed on their farms which he was uspervising. Adjourned sine die, subject to the usual conditions. A DAIRY FARMER'S APPEAL. Frank Herbert Jcllyman, dairy farmer, New Plymouth (Mr. A. H. Johnstone), appealed on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship. He deposed that he resided on 2% acres two miles from New Plymouth, He owned 370 acres freehold on Frankley rOad, which carried 85 cows milked by machines, 65 young stock, 45 pigs and tlhree liorses. He had a man and wife on the farm to do the milking, take milk to the factory and look after the stock. Appellant did the supervision, ploughing and general farm work The land was infested with blackberries, and appellant had to cut weeds, repair fencing and stump in his spare time. He also had a leasehold of 50 acres on the Veale road, running on it 15 cows and cropped 18 acres. In all he cropped 70 acres. As soon as 40 acres were fed off he would have to plough and resow it. To Captain Walker: He hnd been a meat exporter in tlhe interval between letting his cows on shares, but competition was keen. He had a brother milk, ing at Norfolk road, farming and another brother at Hamilton, who had heen farming but was in ill health. This brother could not look after appellant's property. Johnstone), appealed on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship. lie was accountant to Messrs Collett and Co.. produce merchants- lie had been classed C2. Ilis ivife was iii ill health. To Captain Walker: If his wife's health improved he would go into camp. Adjourned till the April sitting. ADJOURNED. The following appeals were adjourned till next sitting, appellants not having been medically "boarded: Frederick Charles Jul), plumber, New Plymouth (Mr. Bennett); Sydney Joseph Sutton, farmer, Waitoitoi; Alec Osborne Woollett, fruiterer, New Plymouth. The case of Joseph B. Bretherton, farmer, Toko, was adjourned till the April sitting. Cecil Johnston, storekeeper (New Plymouth), whose case had been adjourned from a previous sitting, stated that his business position had not changed. He had not sold his stock because he had been notified that his brother, a partner in the business, was returning' from, the war. Hs brother had now returned, but. was not fit to take up business yet and had to go to Cambridge, The case was adjourned till the April sitting. The appeal of Patrick Joseph O'Grady, farm maiiager, Urenui, was adjourned to Haw era. , WRONG CLASS, Walter Ernest Willis, storeman, Okato, appealed on the ground that he was wrongly classified.—Appeal allowed. (DISMISSED- ■ The appeal of William Herivel Prcece, hairdresser, New Plymouth, was formally dismissed, appellant having been medically boarded C2. John William Simmons, dairy farmer, Tarata, did not appear and his appeal was dismissed.
