BUILDING WOODEN SHIPS. EXTENSIVE BRITISH PROGRAMME. STEEL SHIP ORDERS PENDING. Received Feb. 2, 5.5 p.m. Vancouver, Feb. 1. 'flip ITritish Government has decided to embark on an extensive wooden ship building industry on the Pacific coast of Canada. Orders have been given for forty ships to be immediately constructed. Other orders arc pending for steel ships. FAILURE OF SUBMARINiSM. GERMAN COMMENTS. Received Feb. 3. 5.5 p.m. Rome, Feb. 2. The Bremen Zeitung has published an article, signed by "Admiral X„" declaring the submarine campaign to be a failure. German papers point out that it cost hundreds of precious lives, and that many of the best submarines have been lost. LINER SUNK BY COLLISION. THE CREW SAVED. Australian Cable Association. Received Feb. 3, 5.5 p.m. Londou, Feb. i. The liner Montreal was sunk by collision. The crew were saved. ARMED BOARDER SUNK. ■2ii LIVES LOST. 1 Aih and N.Z. The Admiralty reports that the armed boarding steamer Louvain was torpedoed and sunk in the eastern Mediterranean on January 21, 7 officers and 217 men being lost. ANDANIA'S MAILS LOST. Aus. and N.Z, Cable Assoc, and Reuter. Received Feb. 3, 5.5 p.m. London.' Feb. 2. The Press Bureau states that letters and mails for Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan and Hong Kong, posted between January 23 and 25, were lost on the Andania.
