MUNITIONS DIRECTOR. WITH SWEEPING POWERS. Washington, Jan. 2a. It is officially announced that Mr. E. J. Stcttinhis lias been appointed sur-veyor-general of all army purchases. Mr. Stettinius was for long associated with Mr. .). P. Morgan, and completely controlled the Allied purchases of war niaterials in the United States. He is invested with sweeping powers, making him virtually munitions director. General Pershing cabled that the American forces have been in action on the French front on several occasions 1 this week. STATEMENT OF WAR PROGRESS. Washington, Jan. 25. Mr. Baker has announced that he intends to address the Semite Committee detailing America'* *var progress.
