| YESTERDAY'S SITTING. (Before Mr. A. Crooke, S.M.). FALSE PRETENCES. Angus Cameron Garner was charged on the information of the police that he did, on the sth January, 1«)18, at New Plymouth obtain tile, sum of £3 by means of a false advertisement in the Taranaki Herald, <>n December "27, 1917. Accused was represented by Mr. F. Wilson and pleaded guilty, electing to lie dealt with summarily Mr. Wilson said the facts were that accused on Christmas Eve lost a sum of money in New Plymouth for which lie advertised. On the same night ho heard of a. sum of money being found bv a young girl who had gone out with accused's mother Accused conceived the idea of getting that money, and had done °o b .v means of an advertisement in the newspaper. The accused was only 18 voars of age- and belonged 'to a res'peetilf- family. The inonev had been refunded to the police, and Mr. Wilson asked that he be treated leniently. Sub-Inspector HJutton -said 'although nothing was known against defendant, he had told ati abominable lot of lies' in connection with the matter, and had caused the false advertisement to be put in tne paper. The Magistrate said he was reluctant to deal hardly with a first offender who was also a very young man. He would he convicted and ordered to come up for sentence at any tinje within six months, it called upon. STRAYING CATTLE. Walter Rudkin was charged on the information of Olias. D. Grant, inspector for the Taranaki Countv Council with on December G, 1917. allowing a horse to be at large on the Tariki road in the County of Taranaki. Mr. J. H. Quilliam appeared for the inspector. The do. tendant did not appear and a fine of 5s (costs 7s) was inflicted. Leslie Payne was charged on the information of the same inspector with allowing a horse to Be at large on December IS. 1917, on. the Mountain road. Defendant, who did not appear, was convicted and fined as (costs 7s). BREACH OF FACTORIES ACT. W. R. Leigliton, cabinet maker, New Plymouth, was charged on the information of the factory inspector with a breach of the Factories Act by employing a boy under 18 years on the statutory half holiday on December 20, 1917. Defendant, who was represented by Mr. A H. Johnstone, pleaded guilty and was fined 5s and posts 7s. "REACHES OF SHOPS AND OFFICES ACT. James Corrigall, bookseller and stationer, New Plymouth, was charged by the Inspector of Factories with employing an assistant after one o'clock on the afternoon on December 20, the dav being the statutory half holiday. Mr. F. Wilson. appeared for defendant and pleaded guilty. A line of 5s (costs Ts) was inflicted. ('. VV. VValdock, fruiterer and tobacconist. pleaded guilty to a charge of keeping his shop open" after one o'clock on January the statutory half-holi-day. Defendant said 'he was under a misunderstanding. He thought, an he had closed on January 2, he could keep open on the half-holiday. Immediately be became aware that he was in the vv.rong he had closed his shop. Defendant was fined 10s, costs 9s>. BREACH OF MOTOR REGULATIONS. For failing to notify a change of ownership of a motor cycle Stephen Coitanovitch was fined 5s (costs 9s).
