KITCHENER SCHOLARSHIPS

ORIGINAL PROPOSAL VARIED. At yesterday's meeting of the Taranaki Education Board a letter was received from the Director of Education (l)ri Anderson), bringing under notice the Kitchener Memorial scholarships which had been instituted through the generosity of Colonel C. H. Rhodes, who had donated the / sum of £IOOO, with the object, as was first, intended, of establishing scholarships for the purpose of training naval and military cadets. The letter pointed out that the'excessive cost of carrying out the original proposal had caused an alteration to be made, 'and Colonel Rhodes had decided that the scholarships should lie for agricultural students. The iden wa« to give practical and scientific training to young men who were the sons of soldiers or sailors who had been killed at the war or had become permanently disabled. It was proposed to offer scholarships to young men of from 111 to 20 years of age who had completed ft course In agricultural and dairy science at a recognised technical college, or, as an alternative, to bnvs who had completed a two years' course in agricultural at a secondary or dlstrlnt high school. The scholarship* would be of tlie value of .I*3o, and bo (enrfhle for two or three years at an agricultural college or a Government experimental farm, such as the Weraroa farm. The Department was appealing for an augmentation by the [Jtihllf of the fund started by Colonel Rhodes. Already a promise of a further .{1260 had been" received, and the Government had offered to subsidise subscriptions at £ for £ up to £IOOO. Subscriptions to the fund could be sent to Colonel Rhodes, or to the Director of Education. It was hoped to make the tat award of scholarships this year. Mr. Dixon said the matter was very important, and should be brought prominently under the notice of agricultural students as an incentive to them. Mr. Wilkinson moved, »n<l Mr. Dixon seconded, that the letter be acknowledged, and that the board intimate that it would use every means to have the mutter given wide publicity.
