HEADMASTERS' REPORTS.

OBLIGATIONS TO SCHOOL COMMITTEES. The question of the furnishing of reports on the working of schools\by headteaehers to school committees came under notice at yesterday's meeting of the Taranaki Education Board. A letter was received from the Hawera School Committee, in which it was stated that the headmaster had furnished reports to the committee which were considered insufficiently comprehensive, and asking for the guidance of the board as to what it was entitled to expect from the headmaster under the board's regulations. The chairman said that there was no regulation governing the matter of such reports. Mr. Dixon said that it was about time the matter waß dealt with, and some alteration made. He knew there had been complaints that the inspector's reports had been withheld from the teachers by the head-teacher, and that such was not in the best interests of the school or the staff. Mr. Wilkinson said he was of opinion that monthly reports by head-teachers to committees should bo compulsory. The committees were entitled to the fullest information regarding the internal working of the schools; otherwise they might soon lose interest in the controi of the school. Mr. Smith considered the board should ask to see a copy of a report, and then judge the matter. Mr. White was of opinion that the board should have a by-law, not only compelling teachers to make! reports to committees, but also determining the nature r" report. < motion of Messrs Wilkinson ant. i it was resolved to ask the Hawera Committee to supply the board with a copy of the report complained of. A letter on somewhat similar lines was received from the Ongnrue School Committee, and it was decided to reply tlmt the board had the matter under coii-'-'- •- ation.
