THE TARANAKI TOURNAMENT. "«i(T DAI'S PLAY The thirteenth animal toiirnanieiil under the auspices of the Taranaki Bowling Centre was opened yesterday morning on the New Plymouth greens. The whole of the province is well represented. Forty-four rinks entered, including sixteams from Wanganui. The rinks have been divided into five sections, and all games will be of '2l heads, except in cases of a tie, when an extra head will be played. The weather was ideal, the slight breeze being just sufficient to temper the beat without affecting the play. All the greens were in excellent order. The arrangements were complete in every detail, and the secretary (Mr. (). N. Firth) and the executive committee are to be congratulated on the manner in which the tournament was organised, and the first day's play carried on. The umpires were Mr. W. F. Brooking (New Plymouth green), Mr. F. -J. Hill (West End), and Mr. S. Rundle (Jitzroy). The visitors were welcomed to the tournament and to the town, and hopes expressed that, the play would prove most enjoyable. TO-DAY'S PLAY. To-day play will commence at !) a.m., Section A at West End Green, Section IS at Fitzrov, Section C at Fitzroy, Section T> at West End, Section E at New Plymouth. i Tho most interesting match of the day was that between A. K. Smart and Mason, in which both skips played with their usual skill and good judgment, Smart being particularly deadly in his drives, and finally winning; the game by a perfect shot. Mason opened scoring with 3, to which Smith replied with a single and five, thus obtaining the lead, which he kept till the 20th head. Up to the sixteenth head Mason had only scored six times, the board showing Smart 17, Mason f); but by excellent play Mason tied with hid opponent on the' 21 at head- The play oil' was most exciting, for when the skips went up Mason lay two, which hia first delivery failed to improve. Smart then went for the two scoring bowls, Which he disposed of by a splendid shot', ahd lay three up, and Mason's last delivery being short, the game went to Smart, amid great applause. 1 Another team that deserves special mention is Auroa, one of the youngest clubs in the province. They managed to strike three strong teams, two of the skips being in the forefront of the game —Abram and Sole—but in each of the three gained Auroa put up a close fight, losing to Spnrdle by only 3 points, to Sole by 1 point, and to Abram by 3 1 points. In the match with Sole three heads were burnt.
The play throughout was of high merit and quite up to tournament form, the perfect condition of the three greens in great measure accounting for the accuracy of the deliveries. In a few cases there were large margins, but a large proportion of the games were very close. The work of drawing the teams for a tournament requires the services of an expert, and the trouble involved is considerable. For this tournament the work was carried out by Mr. A. K. Smart, and he is deserving of much praise for (lie excellent manner in which it was perI'onnc^l. DOMINION TOURNAMENT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, Last Niglit.
