OPUNAKE.
(From Our Own Correspondent). The funeral of the late Mrs. McCdOfc ? 00 'iP' f " !p on Saturday, a number of old identities being present. The funeral service' was eelebajited by Revs. Russtll and GOsnelt, The Rev. R. B. Gosnell will be leaving Opunake within a few days, he havlhjf accepted service with the Y.M.C.A., and' it is reported, will take up duties on off# of the lighting fronts 'at an early date. A petition, which is being numerously signed, is in circulation in this district . praying that the Health Department, wift allow Dr. Sharpe to remain in the dintriet. It appears that when tho doctor first came here "no was under the impression that it was au open field, but v there is more under tlie surface than is apparent on top. Tlie doctor hasl several good openings offered him, and is inclined to enter iuto a permanent practice rattier than remain as a stop-gap. TIMS residents are very desirous that tb# doctor slfould remain here, and it ig said Me is inclined to do so if professional eti- 1 quette does not run counter to his desire. The local people cannot understand why the health of the people should lie a recording consideration. At the present time we have the best medical service that has yet been our lot. Following up the petition there is likely to bo a deputation on the matter to headquarters in Wellington. The Town Board lias entered into an arrangement regarding the Maefarlane patent automatic lighting system. Car(bide is now priceless for generating gas, and the eleetric lighting proposals are still somewhere in the "going to be" stage. On Saturday the Opunake-Eltlmm mail bus, on returning to Elthain, burst a tyre which caused the bus to run into a bank, and an elderly lady aboard wag thrown out and received a nasty shaking Pictures four nights a week. That ' is the only amusement we have. We are piciorialista at nijhb and milk culturists !>y day,
