TWO PRESSING PROBLEMS. The London correspondent of the Sydney Morning Herald wrote on November 13 to that journal as follows:—"The enemy's still unchecked invasion qf Italy and the very probably prolonging of the war which it suggests have emphasised the. importance of oup two most pressing domestic problems—that of food and that of man-power. Sir Arthir Yapp has issued this week his suggestions to the community for a voluntary rationing of themselves with a view to save tonnage and to eke out home supplies. The scheme allows children freedom to eat as they will, and it suggests a. basis of meat and bread regulation by adults. To the manual worker, for example, if he is engaged in heavy work, is plotted 81b of bread weekly, to ordinary manual workers 7ll>, and to sedentapy workers fi'/olb, while WQipeji are similarly adjudged to be entitled tp 51b, 4ilb and .lib respectively. Only the bread allowance is so graded, and as to the other food we are instructed that we should eat no mope than 2lb of meat weekly, 12oz. of cereals, other than bread, lOoz of butter, margarine, lard, oils and fats, and 9 oz of sugar. Sir ArfFmr Yapp advises lis that the rations have been scientifically determined as sufficient for health, mid they are the most that can be n ]- lowed In the present stringency. As to man-power, Sir Auckland Ge'ddcs has announced that a vigorous eombing-out of eligible men is about to take place, that bp does not believe in the cry of young men first, and sfngle men next, lint intends to proceed strictly on the lines of important or less important occupatin, and that a real and universal | national service cannot any longer he delayed. Tims d fl es the grip of war .harden upon this enuntrv, however It may be in favored far-o/l' lands elsewhere.
