NOTIFICATION OF MAILS.
STATEMENT BY MINISTER 0* DEFENCE. By Telegraph.—Press Association, Christchurch, Last Night. Referring to-day to the different poll* eies (idopted in Australia and New Zealand .with reference to the notification of the arrival and departure of mails., Hon. Sir J. Allen said: Any change in the present regulation* would be a matter for Cabinet. The present position is that we have definite instructions froM' the Home Government that we should not relax our regulations in New Zealand. .Although Canada relaxed her regulations, tile matter was so represented to the Jmperinl Government that Canada was |j»ked to leimpose the strict conditions again, and, as far as 1 know, she did so. It is true that the Australians are not enforcing the same strict control, but that is a matter for the Imperial authorities to consider. I want it to be Understood that we do not want to impose any restrictions. Jt is simply done for the purpose of saving our ships, and the lives of our people. Too much information has got out about the movements' of our. vessels.
