STRATFORD.

(From Our Own Correspondent). Stratford, .Jan. 17. There was a short sitting of the S.M. colift, this morning, Messrs. <J. D. »Sole and J. Masters, J.'sP., being on the beneli. The charge heard was one laid by the poliee against Win. Smith, with using obscene language on the road iu front of the Toko Junction Hotel. Smith pleaded guilty, and elected to be dealt with summarily. Sergeant Dale stated that Smith reached Toko, and stopped at the Junction Hotel. The following morning being the worse for liquor, the publican refused to give him drink. Defendant then went out on to the road and used bad language. He returned the next night the worse for drink, and was put out of the hotel, and used the bad language forming tl|e charge. The bench said that Smith was the class of man who should be prohibited for his own good. The ofl'ence was a serious one, the maximum penalty being twelve months' imprisonment, without the option of a tine. Defendant, agreed to take out a prohibition order against himself, and the bench said that, in view of the good character given hirn by Sergeant Dale, he would be fined only £5 with costs £1 17s fid, in default two months' imprisonment with hard labor. WELCOME HOME SOCIAL. The Midhirst Town ITall was crowded last evening, the occasion being the wel-come-home ssiK'ial tendered to Messrs Hamblyn, Moratti, Askew, Carroll and Hunwick. Each of the returned soldiers received an illuminated address (framed), llie work of Mr. J. McAllister. The chairman of the Patriotic Committee, Mr. Mount.ford, presented the addresses, at the same time expressing the pleasure of the Midhirst and other friends at seeing the recipients that night once more in their midst. He hoped that those who had been wounded would be restored to health in due course, and concluded by calling for cheers for the men. These were very heartily given. A very fine programme was submitted, the soloists receiving a great reception, encores being a feature of the programme. Those assisting in this direction were Mesdames Tapp, Hatcher and Harris, Miss Martin, and Messrs B. J. Peters, P. Aitken, G. T. Walters, T. Wilson, C. Mahoney, Harris and Enwright. The accompanists wera Misses Huae, Anderson and Mr. C. 11. Fox. A dance flowed, and this was also well attended, tfie hall bejng crowded with eager, perspiring couples, who found the floor and music everything that could be desired. GENERAL. At the courthouse, yesterday, an inquest was held on the J)ody of Mary Saggers, of Tahora, found dead in her home. After hearing the evidence of John Suggers, her husband, who said his wife sull'ered from fits, Dr. Steven, and Constable Seannell, a verdict of death from natural causes was returned. Mr. (.'. D. Sole was coroner, and Mr J. H. Thompson foreman of the jury. T. Lamason'a sale is advertised, when a quantity of Nelson fruit is coming to hand. A 5-room house is also advertised for sale. It is very frequently a perplexing duty in trjing to discover just what would please him for a birthday gift. Don't i rouble any longer, but just hasten to C. E. Jamas' warehouse, and if he prefers a pipe you will find the best varieties here, ditto smokes, if he likes literal urc choice reading will be found on the shelves. If in need of military brushes, tlie shop for the purchase is C. E. James', and don't forget it.*
