George Smith and others waited on the council regarding proposed footbridge across the l'atea river at Cordelia anil Ariel streets. A petition signed by fifty residents in the vicinity of these streets requested the council to pinee a sum 011 the estimates to erect a bridge, which is urgently needed, and claiming that. Cordelia street was the most suitable, being more central, as between the two traffic bridges.—Resolved, "That the question of p. footbridge be liekt'over until next meeting, the engineer to prepare estimate of cost of both bridges in the meantime.'' Mr. R. 11. Cameron desired that the council make some alterations or improvements tn the telephone in use to taxi-cars plying for hire.—Referred to the works committee to confer with owners and report to next meeting. J. A. Hunan, Minister of Education, wrote notifying the council of the receipt of its letter regarding the disestablishment of the district high school and the requisition of a site for the erection thereon of a technical high school, and that same would receive his consideration.—Received. Strafford School Committee applied for a service pipe to the school buildings from the water main in Penton street. — Referred to works committee, with power to act. Applications for increase in salary by P. Aitken, and for double pay during the Christmas fortnight by J. M. Butcher and li. Meuli were referred to the lighting committee. Auctioneering licenses were granted to Messrs Newton King, T. Lamason and the New Zealand Loan ami Mercantile Agency ('ompijny. Mr. A. Welch's tender for lease of borough reserve was accepted. The works committee reported that they l:rd no recommendation to make regarding the request of Mr. Curtis for part payment of storm water drain. Mr. S'lllivan, borough engineer, is to peruse drainage plans in Mr. Healey's possession an! to report on number of pipes required—Adopted. The Wellington City Council is to be requested to allow Mr. Morton, city engineer. to advise the council regarding ihe suggested improvements in Broadway, al.-o in connection with alterations lo the water and drainage service. The electrical engineer was instructed to furnish a report on wiring the picture [theatre: (1) Schedule of material, and prices on which he based his estimates; (2) schedule of material and cost of wages, etc., used on the work; (3) amount of extras; (4) total cost of work. Mr. Newton also to be asked to remain in ollice until his' successor has taken over plant and stock, an<J leave of absence dated from that time. The general committee recommended that half rates be charged on the Town Hall for patriotic purposes, and that the town band have the hall one night per annum free of charge.—Adopted. The engineer was instructed to arrange to have a member of the borough staff attend to the water service valves whenever a fire occurs. The A.W.I!. Milking Machine Com - panv complained of the electric motor being out of order, and useless for the company's requirements. They requested repairs to be effected as soon as possible.. The engineer stated that the niotor would he connected up with another transformer in a day or two. Cr. .1. Masters said he was pleased at the engineer's assurance that there was nothing in the complaint to cause a scare amongst, users of the electric power.—The engineer said that when the price of fuel fell to normal again there would be no reason why the Diesel engine should not be run continuously, and then there would be sufficient power Mr P. Skoglund, town clerk, was granted leave of absence for ten days. . The attention of the engineer was directed to the estate of the footpath between Page street and the Defence ollice. Accounts were passed for payment, and the couneil rose.

j MODEL DAIRY FARM. The monthly meeting of the committee was held on Saturday. Present: Messrs ■I, W. Deem (chair), W. H. Were, R. Dingle, S. Pitt, F. Ranford, J. B. Richards. It was reported that the cows have all been tested and the results will be considered at next meeting. The o.uest'on of dehorning the cows was deferred to next meting. Mr. Deem reported that the swedes were sown on December \i and 13, and manurial tests initiated in accordance with report of previous meeting. The labelling of the various plots Was loft in the hands of the chairman, with' power to act. A vote of appreciation was nccorded Mr. D. J. Malone for gift of soft drinks to schoolboys engaged in hoeing crops. The County Council has completed the access filling and metalling. Instructions woro Issued to foreman to leave all live trees unmolested. The blind creek in No. 9 has been drained by open ditch, which will be piped and re-filled before next ploughing. Stumping and clearing has proceeded satisfactorily by our own stall' south and easfcof shed. Metalling of lane has been deferred until after harvesting operations. Mangels have been horse-hoed once. Mangels and carrots have been hand-hoed by pupils from Stratford school once. A mower was hired from the Stratford Racing Club and the oats and grass in No. 0 and No. (hill paddock) cut therewith. This was harvested with the assistance of neighbors and the stacks raked down without rain. Tiie oats were very thin and short. 'Both plots of turnips look well. The first sowing b still rather thick, but the 'second sowing is very good. The mangels are very satisfactory, but rather thin in places. Tho carrots are very satisfactory. GENERAL. Mesdames Coleman and Walker, Ngaere, controlled the Ladies' Patriotic Mart on Saturday, the amount secured being .■£(!. Mesdames Oixou and C. One ot' the pupils of the Stratford District High School—Walker Pierce—a candidate in the '-ccent, examination for junior national scholarship, came well up in the list of successful Taranaki scholars, totalling f>(!l marks. At the council meeting last night. Cr. Thompson mentioned the blockage of lire plugs by silt 011 the occasion of Saturday night's tire, and desired information as to who was responsible for same. Cr. Malone suggested that one of the borough employees should be appointed to undertake the work of cutting oil' the water from other parts of the borough. The borough engineer said there was a monthly inspection of plugs and valves, and there, was no neglect. He agreed with Cr. Mnlone's suggestion, and a borough worker will assist in cutting oil water from jnains other than those required by the fire brigade, whenever occasion occurs. It is very frequently a perplexing duty in trying to discover just what would please him for a birthday gift. 'Don't trouble any longer, lmt just hasten to C.
