TARANAKI WAR RELIEF ASSOCIATION.

GHANTS MADE BY ASSOCIATION AND LOCAL ISUAXI'IIES. The amount oi relief granted from April 1 to December yi is as follows: (•rants made by local brandies, £372 15s hUd. Grants made by Association, iii'M 13s Od. The number of cases dealt with by the Association is 280, and the number of men returned to New Zealand as per discharged Soldiers' Information Department's report is 408. I The relief granted by the Association for the quarter ending December 31, 1917, is as follows:—(a) Grants on loan account to soldiers: Nine specific cases—one to acquire property, throe for farming, three to enter into business, one for relief of excessive high rate of interest on existing mortgage, one sundry to dependent, one grant to meet sundry expenses until farm is more profitable. Grants by way of relief are as follows:—To soldiers, £11,5 los Id; to dependents, .£B4 lis Od. Of the grants to soldiers for the quarter ending December 31, 1917, £3B 15s was for the purpose of supplementing the Government clothing allowance. The balance was in the nature of supplementing pensions, paying exes., etc. The total amount granted by way of loans for the quarter aforementioned was £1215. Taking the number of returned men. as per figures supplied by the Discharged Soldiers' Information Department, as the basis of calculation, the percentage of cases dealt with equals BB.fi per cent. The New Plymouth branch of the Taranaki War Relief Association during the quarter ended December 31. lfllf, dealt with twelve loan applications, and twenty-two grants to soldiers and their dependents totalling .Clfl;' ]os lid. This sum has been disbursed bv us on behalf of the various patriotic societies concerned, also several applications for help from the Financial Assistance Roard and for the widowed mothers' allowance have received attention during the same period, thus emphasising the usefulness ot the local committee's office.
