TURF TOPICS. (By ,; Moturoa."S J Egmont entries close next Friday. > Wellington Cup on Saturday next. Jsobleman is a hot order for Wellington. Hymestra is engaged in three races at Trentham next Saturday. Jockeys' premiership: H. Gray 22, Ashley Reed 21, Roy Reed 17% wins. Ayah was very unlucky at Ellerslie. ?<ouk out next start. j>iplane is moving well at Ricearton, knd may be sent over to 'Stralia next month. Outside Long Range, Sir Ceo. Clifford's horses arc right out. of luck at present. Adjutant is likely to break the spell shortly. Those who are harping Nobleman for the Wellington Cup should notice how close he is to good horses like Red Ribbon. Cynic, and Form Up. J. O'Shea scored a! wins at the Auckland meeting, having good horses like Desert Cold, Hymestra. Estland, and British Arch to ride. Gray came next with four firsts, winning on Multiply. Demagogue, and Fabrirpiette (twice). Turangapito is doing a lot of travelline round the small meetings, but Alec Hall does not give him much racing. Perhaps they are afraid of getting his feet wet. Even' '»• is having a tford to say. about t'uc Railway Department's nonsensical action in refusing to sell tickets by the mail train to Stratford on the occasion of the New Year race meeting. It is f|uestionable whether the Department has the power to refuse tickets, providing there is room on a train. Excursion fares are non est, and if a person was going to Stratford on private business, .whether it be in the nature of a race meeting or a clergymen's conference, it js.no business of the Railway Department. What sense was there in stopping tickets to Stratford and issuing tickets to Eltham, the next station further on? That is what the public was advised to do. and the extra revenue obtained was nothing but an offensive "try on." When will the public wake lip? Now that Desert Cold and Estland are booked to race in 'Stralia, and Biplane also likely to measure strides with Lowry's champions, New Zealanders are filled with regrets that these great equines could not have been matched in the Dominion. A meeting between Biplane and Desert Cold has been talked of for a long while, and now that .the meeting seemed imminent New Zealand loses its tit-bit and 'Stralia snaps it up. • There were only Rbout, forty tickets an Speedwell Mae at Stratford the other day, but everybody seems to have; backed it, except those who intended to and were "shut out." Wonderful how racing improves the imagination—or was it confirmation of the condensed wisdom that "All men are,'' etc? Mr. W. Duncan's Bayardo colt. Bayberry, was given a run at Martnn the other dav, and, although 'not nearly ready, showed up promisingly. He dashed out smartly* and made such a bold showing for four furlongs that some people were afraid he was going to win. They backed the others, of course.
