A sensational shooting affair occurred at Collarenebri, Now South Wales, Iftst tvrek. About 5 o'clock in the morning, Detective Small, accompanied by Constable Hayes, visited a place a short distance from the town for the purpott of locating some stolen sheep. A man who was asked tp accompany the police to look at some sheep in a paddock, left them for a few moments, with the «t----pres«od intention of getting his horse out of the stable. Some little time elapsed, nnd as Constable Hayes turned his hoTse round to look for the person the report of a rifle was heard, and a bullet passed through Constable Hayes' helmet, dose to the scalp. The constable was thrown from his horse and partly stunned by the fall. Detective Small then rushed' the man, who was not fur away, and a,denperatc struggle followed. Constable Hayes, recovering from the shock of the fall, went to Dpteclivo Small's assistance and had to strike the detective'! nssailant over the head with a rifle before lie could ho overpowered. Eventually an arrest was made. CMeclive Small was considerably bruised and bitten.
