THE ESSENTIALS OF PEACE.
The purpose of the Allies in refusing a compromise peace was recently expounded by General Smuts, a member of the British War Cabinet. "Our aim is not merely to test t-'ho enemy," he said. "Wo want to see arise from this carnage and slaughter a new and better world. We want to see more justice in the country, less poverty, and less luxury. We want to see better standards of living, more economic freedom and security for all Workers in a world in which there will be no idlers, rith or poor. If we are to see this new world one condition must be fulfilled—militarism must be swept away from the face of t,he earth. I hope we shall never sheathe the sword and never make peace until we know there is no longer a threat of that militarism. Germany must learn the lesson that war does not pay. The Vages of sin is death. That Germany must learn. Germany must not retain an inch of her war map at the end of this war. Let our mottobe 'No spoliation of the spoilers. No peace until Germany is prepared to evacuate all those countries she has overrun.' We do not want to break up Germany and Austria. We are not breaking up anybody or anything, but we say 'Let these small nations come into their own.' If they cannot get their independence let them get their automony, but let lihem not be tyrannised over by these Imperialistic empires. I do not think it is worth while to prosecute this war until we have got rid of the Kaiser and all the other evils. Remember, we not the only judges. Mankind, history, jnd God will pass judgment on tTie Kaiser and the other instruments of tyranny. {Jive us a good peace, and you need hot solve now all the problems which confront the universe."
