THE NEED FOR ECONOMY IN TIRE SERVICE.

| SOME HINTS ON HOW TO GET IT. Every patriotic motorist realises the need of thrift in the operation of his car —a thing which is not only a personal benefit, but a national duty. Not all motorists, however, realise that a great deal can be done to lower mileage cost by the proper handling of tires, their intelligent selection and care. No matter how much the construction of the tire may forestall trouble, no matter what the quality of the tire or its endurance under wear, there are certain errors in usage which, added to carelessness, cost motorists many thousands of pounds each year. With a little forethought, the owner can reduce tire bills with minimum effort and time.

Tifes should be selected carefully as to size. Equipment should always be large enough to carry the load without undue strain. Remember also to apply the tire correctly, removing any rust or foreign matter which may bave accumulated on the rim. It is important, also, to see that the tire is properly inflated.

Care in handling the brakes is a big factor in long mileage. When the foot brake is applied hard and suddenly the tread is in danger of severe damage. All motorists, of course, realise that driving in street is hard on the tread. In this connection, it is vital to remember also that the sharp bending action of the fabric will, in time, cause inside breaks. Tlus may happen with the very best tire made.

Above all, the small injuries; should never be neglected. Slight cuts in the tread admit foreign matter. Dirt, pebbles, etc., continue to work in, finally resulting in tread separation. There are good preparations on the market which, if promptly used in an emergency, will take care of these minor injuries. Many a tire has been saved from the discard by their prompt use.

Be sure that tihe inner tubes are the right size and properly applied. Most service men will give you full information on this question—in .fact the companies making good tires have plenty of helpful and instructive literature. For exainple.thc special representative here of the Firestone Tire Company of Akron. Ohio, U.S.A., has an excellent booklet on this subject entitled, "The Care and Repair of Tires." This will be sent you free if you send a nost card to Akron for it.
