BUILDING IN NEW PLYMOUTH.

PERMITS ISSUED LAST YEAR. . Building progress in New Plymouth, even without making allowance fox - the extraordinary conditions prevailing, lias been wonderfully well maintained during the past year. From January to December there were issued in all 10S building permits. These represented contracts up to the value of £50,848, or an average of slightly over £SOO per contract. Many of the permits issued were for additions and alterations to dwellings, and that in itself is a healthy sign for the municipality. Six permits were for contracts of over £IOOO in value, and two were for works costing over £2OOO. Most of the larger contracts were for business premises, and included J. B. McEwan and Co.'s warehouse and offices, Kurta and Co.'s fish mart, the Taranaki Freezing Company's stores at Moturoa, Cock and Co.'s warehouse and offices, and the Museum, whilst the two largest eontracts were for the Taranaki Ironsand, Ltd., and Messrs May and Arrowsmith's new bakery. It is wefi known, 6i course, that the erection of several large business premises within the town has 'been delayed solely on account of war conditions, so it maj' oe fairly claimed that the borough of New Plymoutli has had a very satisfactory year, so far as the additions to the number of buildings I within its borders are concerned.
