CAR CAUGHT BY TRAIN.

A MIRACULOUS ESCAPE CAPTAIN MeDIARMID UNHURT. HIS MOTHER BADLY BRUISED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Hawera, Last Night. A serious accident occurred 011 the South Road railway crossing on Saturday afternoon, when a motor car driven by Captain McDiarmid, N.Z.M.C., of Featherston, and formerly of New Plymouth, collided with an outgoing train to Wanganui. Mrs. McDiarmid, mother of Captain McDiarmid, was also in the car. The .cowcatcher struck the car in the centre, and carried it along the line for a distance of thirty or forty yards, throwing the occupants 011 the bank. Mrs. McDiarmid was rendered unconscious, and was taken to a private hospital in a motor ambulance. No bones were broken, but she was badly bruised, and is progressing favorably. Captain McDiarmid escaped unhurt. When the driver of the train observed the car, he promptly applied the brakes, and did all that was possible to avoid a collision.

It seems that Captain McDiarmid did not see the train approaching until within a few yards of the crossing, which is a bad one. The ear was smashed almost beyond recognition, and the occupants had a miraculous escape.
