Word was received to-day that, Privates L. Clotigli and if. Jlcßau have been killed in action. Much sympathy is felt for " Die relatives of the above, who weve well and favorably known in the district.
Q.M.S. .T. Capper, who has had considerable fighting and has been wounded four times, returned homo during the week. Tile Mayor and the Patriotic Committee, as well as a large gathering of citizens, assembled at the railway station, and his Worship, 011 behalf of the 1 gathering, tendered, .Sergeant Capper a heartv welcome home, which was suitably replied to by the returned soldier. Mr. V. flarkness' little girl, who was injured in a motor accident. 011 Wednesday, is progressing satisfactorily at the New Plymouth hospital. A local sport, who knows more about bikes and punctures than racehorses, was fortunate enough lo strike t.h" bi«; dividend at Stratford, and is talking of cutting the present rate of interest, to borrowers.
Mr. D. 7T. McDonald, who has heen confined to'his bed for some. days, is still indisposed. Hay-making everywhere is in full swing, crops geimra'l'- are light, but promise to be well saved. K(%n interest, is being taken in swimming, ami there is a probability of a 1 onrnamcnt being held in the near future. 'IV net result of tlie recent school operetta .was £2.5 Ms, which is highly satisfactory to all concerned.
