The Daily News. SATURDAY, JANUARY 5, 1918. AMERICA'S WILL TO WIN.

The recent ca'ble message referring to the way in which American troops are being conveyed to France draws attention to the colossal eiforts that' are being made by the United States to help Hie Allies win the war. America has a reputation for "bigness" and hustle, and it is just those two great factors that are being brought to bear on her heroic measuies in connection with her part in the war. We know how illimitable are her resources, but there are few who can even realise how these resources are being utilised to further the Allies cause, which has been championed by our American cousins. Having once decided to take up Germany's challenge, the United States lost no time in getting to work. It was not mere Government action, but a gigantic national upheaval, a collective move wherein the full strength of the vast democracy was made tense for the mightiest effort in the world's history. Coming after a period of prolonged calm and patience with Prussian trickery, the history of America's war activity is all the more striking, for once the country was aroused, the characteristic qualities of the people impelled them to bend to the great task with all the energy and skill that has made America the marvel of the age. There was, however, no blind rush into faults that would mean delay in rectifying, but profitingby the experience of the Allies and the advice of the British mission, the work of preparation was launched and carried forward with phenomenal celerity. This, | for a nation whose adherence to peace principles and the Monroe doctrine vas almost a fetish, emphatically demonstrated how thoroughly all classes had been aroused in the cause of universal liberty, to gain which the utmost efficiency ivas needed. It is only by recognising these /acts that the greatness of America's efforts can be adequately appreciated. In. the matter of money America has an enviable position, for there is no country which has such vast financial resources as the United States, but in the creation of an armed force worthy of the nation it might well, under the circumstances, he anticipated that obstacles might arise, vet within a fortnight of General Pershing s arrival in France the first contingent of American warriors had been safely transported across the Atlantic without the loss of a single unit, and there

are millions yet available, for when the military register wi< completed if numbered bot\v«-;'n iijju l a n:l icn luillion

Ahvadv a million ami ;i Jim If air in training i:i lite I ni!.i i d ttlixfos and :i large nuniher 111 Kuiope. The (iernunis sneered at the ;u.-sjl'i 1 : 1 y of America affecting the war, and (lie answer to that sneer is the (raining of men in millions to give (lie (ieafh blow to Prussian militarism, and tin; transport of those warriors to Kurope. di ,: pite the strenuous oiTor'.s of (ieriiUMi submarines. Thai, the Teutons now' rccogni-e what American intervention means and how powerless are submarines to stop the constant stream of transports is evidenced hr their feverish rush to turn out larger U boats to deal with the transports which have hifjlierto delied the wider-water craft. America's answer to the Bwit Litvosk peace move is expressed by the determination to hurry forward her armed men with incredible celerity, and to give similar attention to the output of slipping. The American people are cheerfully bearing hcav. taxation, for in six months an expenditure of £4.200,000,000 -was sanctioned, and the country is preparer! to continue this colossal cost to destroy the Prussian war system and secure universal peace. The greatest scientists and inventors are all doing their best to help to win the war and America's liest in this direction is almost beyond comprehension. .Besides providing men and money, America is providing aircraft and aviators on a scale that

is startling. There ia a grim earnestness in the way in which her war efforts are being rushed forward, Twenly thousand aeroplanes are under construction aml a hundred thousand aviators are being 1 trained in all branches of the air service, and it is quite possible that before, the war in ended the Allies mar have a hundred thousand aircraft engaged in completing the triumph over the enemy. The thoroughness of American organisation is a marvel that will live in history, as will the name of President Wilson, the pivot on which the gigantic operations revolve and take for the purposes intended. What America has already done is an earnest of what she w.i'l continue to do until the goal is reached. When- Germany flouted America she opened the flood gates which conlined t-he pent up forces of the creates! nation on earth, and it is the men, the money, the ships, the aircraft and other aseneiea provided by the (Juried States that will he a determining factor in sweeping a. way the hideous menace known as Prussian militarism.
