(By "Moturoa"), The large crowd that journeyed to Stratford yesterday to attend the annual racs meeting was doomed to disappointment, the rain of the previous day and yesterday morning rendering the course unfit to race on. The committee met about 10 a.m., and after hearing tlic opinions of various horseowners, who stated their intention to scratch their horses if the gathering was proceeded with, reluctantly decided to postpone the meeting until to-day. Visiting sportsmen, particularly those who had come from afar, were loud in their condemnation of the club's decision, and the fact that the rain cleared off in the afternoon did not improve the atmosphere of discontent. However, the club's officials know their course best, and in acting in the interests of safety they probably did right. The fact that race 'meetings have been "got off" under worse conditions would not have lessened the club's liability had ar. accident occurred. While sympathising with those who suffered the inconvenience of long car journeys to attend the meeting, and were then slipped up, most people will recognise that the club acted solely in the interests of those most vitally concerned. If Tom, Dick and Harry had thoir day's outing spoiled it was regrotable, but ifnavoidable. Why spill blood to make a Roman holiday? To-day the Stratford course is sure to be on the heavy side, and in making their selections the public should not lose sight of the enhanced prospects of known "mudlarks." Alteration and Glenroy are still favored for the. "double," but Parana Golden Grafton, Innli and Tree Lucerne may also give a good account of themselves. White Ranger gallops well in tho mud, but at a difference of fllbs Yolo seems to have the "pull." Jtoyal Chef' prefers a dry track, but he is not set-'tty meet anything very select in the StrAtlj-. more Hack Handicap, Dasher Bov has. come up from Wanganui with a floaftsji oF trumpets, but he will require improved form to foot it with horse, like' Collector and Zetes. The minor events hjj<ve attracted recent runners into prominence like Compel, Beaufort, Ladv Beaufort, etc., and should provide Interesting racing. TROTTING. CANTERBURY PARK MEETING. Chrisfchurcb, Last Night. The Canterbury Park Trotting Club's summer meeting was held to-day. The weather was unpromising at the commencement, but ideal later on. There was a large attendance.
