VVOMKN TEACHERS' CONFERENCE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Dee. 31. At the annual conference of the New Zealand Women Teachers' Association, the principle of the limitation of the size of classes to 40 under one teacher, and not liure than CO if assisted by a full-time pupil teacher, was unanimously approved. AUCKLAND CUSTOMS DUTIES. 1 Auckland, Dec. 31. The Customs duties collected in Auckland in 1917 totalled £872,81*2, compared with £953,G49 in 1916. The beer duty was £42,278 compared with £39,510. AUCKLAND'S VITAL STATISTICS. Auckland, Dec. 31. The vital statistics of Auckland city (ind district in 1917 are as follow: Marriages 1135, births 3170, deaths 1428. l'n WIG marriages were 1340, births 3265, deaths 14-20. GERMAN CONSUL INTERNED. Anekland, Dec. 31. Carl Seagner, German Consul at Auckland until the outbreak of the war, was arrested to-day and conveyed to Motuihi for internment. He was previously interned in February, 1916, but on the ground of ill-health was released in the following June.
