Sportsmen are reminded that the first race at the Stratford meeting to-morrow will start at 11.3d a.m., and that the totalisator will close promptly on time. Investors, therefore, will be well advised not to wait until the last moment, otherwise they may be cut out. AUSTRALIAN TURF. Received Dec. 30, 5.5 p.m. Sydney, Deo. SO. The Carrington Stakes resulted: Colugo 1, Poitrina 2, La Steppe 3. Won by three lengths. Time, lmin. 12Jscc. TURF TOPICS. (Ry "Moturoa.") On New Year's Day there will be racing at Ellerslie, Mat-ton, Hastings, Stratford, and minor places. Judging by the lengthy lists of acceptors for the various events at Stratford, Taranaki sportsmen need look no further for a splendid day's outing. New .Plymouth form should be a good guide,-though re-handi-caps and penalties may equalise matters sufficiently to ensure close finishes. Movement, Melita, Pergola, Dingle, Collector, and Inah will put\up penalties, while Alteration has been re-handicapped to carry ?.S in the Cup and S.B in the Pouglas Handicap. Alteration's form hero was so good that he has come into markecf favor for .the Stratford Cup, and with 7.8 does not .read badly. Golden Grafton proved at Waverley that she could run out a good .ten furlongs, and her party are quite •satisfied with her impost, 7.0. This pair should take a hand in the settlement of to-morrow's C 550 Cup. Inah will be required to carry 8,5 in the Douglas Handicap, but she is a sturdy little mare to whom the weight should not prove prohibitive. Gjenroy and Starengo have only to start to make an interesting race. The minor events should all attract satisfactory fields. Volo, Royal Chef, Collector, Staccato, and Dingle should hi! well backed. The totalisator does not appear to catch on in New South Wales. At the Kosehill meeting on December 10, the investments totalled only £2OOO on eight race?, while at Kensington £IB4O was ! invested on twelve races. At coun--1 ! try meetings the tickets are as low as , 5s each. The Forty-Fourth Great Northern Derby will be run at Ellerslie to-morrow. . Eslland, Hyinestra, Impediment, and '.others are engaged, but'lSte first-named ' ie likely to start a wasm order. I jfr,rji.i-j. of 4pfe~ running j a

the Auckland Cup and Railway Handicap show that outside the dividendpayers in each race nothing looked like having at any part of the races. The .pilßcwns on 6 all the way, and there wore .some very- tired horses ambling up the Kllerslie 'straight on Wednesday aflcriiooii. ,■ Tiie huge lotalisatt'ir turnover at Ellerslie on iiuxing Day was only the result of a record attendance, and the .struggle to get to the course, and the even more violent fight to get an investment on the tote, took much of the enjoyment off the gathering'. The Railway Department persists in its suicide policy, while ear-drivers and tramway companies build up huge profits, Jt is one thing to go round the schools cadging the kiddies' pence for war bonds, but it is quite another to turn down thousands of pounds in railway fares on race days. This is what our "statesmen" call "finance.'' Ye gods! The question of better totalisator facilities at Ellerslie is one that a keen and business-like club will quickly attend to. but when will the Minister for Railways have a bit of commonsense and take the good money that is held out to him? Acre and Lingerie ran like hairy goats at Awapuni on Thursday. Both'appear to have'had enough of scampering over htud tracks, and would he all the 'better for a spell. I7n|iana is now in great fettle, and, with Harold Young up, will take some stoushing at Marlon. Torfrida had no show at Awaptmi after bolting a mile and a half.' hut punters will get it back next time out. The Wanganui pair, Lady Middleton and Tyson, have nut paid their way on the West Coast yet Some of the crowd at Awapuni reckoned Crowhin-'-t won the Palmerston Stakes. The placed horses, Impediment, Chimera, and Crowlmrst, were spread right across the course at the finish, and were almost in Jine. From the grandstand it was impossible to say which '.von. / Comment, Crowhurst, and Torfrida are the best handicapped horses at Hastings. ventre and Dribble have been scratched for the Marton Cup, Colorado and Tornea for the Hurdles, and Rangitcro for all engagements. Nobleman has been re-handicapped to carry 7.11 in the Cup
