There was a short sitting of the S.M. Court this morning. A prohibition order was made against an elderly man, whilst a line of 10s was inflicted against a lirst. offender arrested at the railway station) yesterday on a charge of drunkenness. A charge of being drunk whilst .having, charge of a motor car was preferred against Wm. Eiehstaedt, who did not appear. Evidence was given by Constable Robertson that on December 15 defendant's car was behaving in an erratic manner in Fenton Street, and he was obliged to get an experienced driver to take the car home. Sergeant Dale stated that in the past there had been narrow escapes whilst Eiehstaedt iiad charge of a horse and gig, and now that he had purchased a motor car witness thought, in the interests of public safety, tlia# defendant should exercise greater eare. A line of £5 and costs 13s was inflicted.
it was a kindly thought that prompted the directors of the new King's Cinema Theatre to place the wlicfle of the proceeds of the opening night of the picture palace to the credit of the Stratford Patriotic Committee, and the latter have resolved to devote the proceeds to the Wounded .Soldiers' Fund. The vocalists include Miss Evelyn Young, a soprano of note from Napier, and several Wanganui favorites cn the ooueert platform are also assisting. The Toko lady. Mrs. Me- 1 Laren, is down for numbers that are sure to please and entertain. Those who enjoy a dance will also have this opportunity, as one follows the concert. There was a good attendance of dancers and others at the social held in the Town Hall last evening. The entertain-' ment was organised by Mrs. BianeUi, 1 who also presided at the piano. The duties of M.C. were entrusted to Messrs 1 E. Tooker and J. Jans, who kept the floor well filled with dancers till after midnight. '<
