DISTRICT NEWS.
I'AIUTA (From Our Own Correspondent). Tarattt, Dec, 24. The Tiirata School picnic and fancy dross ball for children was held last Wednesday. Favored with a fine day, parents and children turned out in fine style, and a very enjoyable afternoon was indulged in. Games and races Wero the order of the day, and every pupil received toys, etc. Mrs. Standish presented the school prize books, which were a fine lot, and every pupil received one. Afternoon tea was then served, and the children wended their way home to prepare for the fancy dress ball in the evening. By eight o'clock in the evening the hall presented a very animated appearance, with the children dressed in thi>ir varilom fancy dresses. A very large number of parents, etc., came along, the result being a packed hall. The grand march, | which was led by Cissie Neilson and Arthur Horn, was done splendidly, and looked very pretty and effective. An en,core was called for, and the march was again given later in the evening. The kiddies then danced Lancers, d'Alberts, military two-steps, Bon Ton, Highland dance, minuet, waltz, schottische, etc., in fine style, and parents were surprised at the neat way the various dances were exeouted by the children. Don Neilson and Willie Officer carried out the duties of M.'sC. for the children excellently. The music for the children's dances was supplied by Mr. F. J. Egglcton, the, head teacher.
During the evening Mr. Waite presented the proficiency certificates, the pupils gaining them being: Christina Neilsen, Mary Stuart, Don Neilseu and Arthur. Horn. Mr. Waite congratulated the successful children, also the teacher.
At the conclusion of the children's dances Mr. Standish, chairman of the school committee, thanked all for their presence and assistance, and for making the picnic and ball such a success. He was sure the parents had gone to a great deal of trouble to make fancy costumes, ; etc.
Mr. F. J. Eggleton, the head teacher, addressed the children, and hoped those who had gained their proficiency certificates would make them stepping atones for something higher. He trusted that the children had all enjoyed themselves, and that they would all have a very pleasant holiday, and come back to school refreshed and read}' for another year's work. On bnhalf of Miss A. E. Press (assistant) and himself, he wished the children and their parents the compliments of the season.
The adults then took possession of the floor, and danciDg was kept up till the sm;all hours of the morning. Miss M. Mackie gave a song, which was encored. Mr. Mat Martin acted as M.C. in his ueual capable manner, and the music was supplied by Mr. Eggleton and Miss M. Patterson, and Mrs. S. George played extras. RAHOTU. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Miss Imibel Clare Prosser, second daughter of Mrs. 15. Rowlands and the late Mr. Samuel Prosser, was united in holy matrimony to Mr. T. C. EversJield, or Kent, England, at the residence of her brother-in-law (Mr. Percy Sole) on the Manihi road, Oaonui. The bride wore a lovely embroidered dress of voile, and was given away 'by Mr Percy Sole. Miss Albina Newman, the chief bridesmaid, wore a robe of cream silk with gold trimmings. The Misses Maudtf Ctagg and Alice Newman were dressed in wHt'c, with liats to match. Uoufjuetis wero carried by the bride and bridesmaids made by Mrs. G. Rodpors from flowers .presented by Mr?. Allan, of
Piliarna. The best man was Mr. flarnet Prosser. About, forty guests sat down to a sumptuous breakfast, when the liHual toasts were honored. The bride received a gold shamrock set with amethysts, and gold brooches were given to the bridesmcids by the bridegroom. IChequa and numerous presents were sent bv friends and well-wishers.
La-st Wednesday evening theiv were symptoms of the coal at the factory firing again, so several directors and suppliers; with the manager, worked until 11 o'clock at night to make tin- factory safe, there being a high wind blowing. The Sunday school picnic was held in Mr. C. Penwarden's bush, which was an ideal plaee, a large number attending.
