STRATFORD..

(From Our Own Correspondent). [AH communications, letters, rlc., left with Mr. 11. J. llopkSis, bookseller, will receive prompt attention.] ' LOAN PROPOSALS. £ " Stratford, Dec. 21. There was little interest taken in the loan proposals for paving Broadway, if the voting on Saturday was an criterion. Less than 300 thought it worth while to visit the booth and record a "yes'' or "no" vote on the propositi to borrow .€15.000. Those who favored the loan were in a good majority, the actual figures being: For IS2, against 81, informal 1. Whether the council will adopt concrete or tar macadam remains to be seen. What is known is that the ratepayers have sanctioned the loan, and by December of next year ratepayers hope to see an improvement on the present conditions prevailing in Broadway. FATAL MOTOR ACCIDENT. Full particulars are not yet available of the motor accident that occurred in the Taungarakau Gorge on Sunday afternoon,• as the result of which man named Woodney was killed. From details to hand a nian named Davis was driving the car, which contained two otners, Wm. Woodney, married, aged !>O, and B. Marshall. By some means the ear went over a bank, falling 27 feet and landing on deceased's chest, death being instantaneous. The body is bring removed to Whangamomona, where the inquest is to be held. Another motor car accident, though happily of a far less serious character, occurred on Saturday evening. With the heavy railway traffic two engines afe required from Hawera, one returning from Stratford soon after arriving. The train was late in arriving at Stratforil, and Mr. Hopkins, driver of the car, evidently forgot that an engine was due south. At anvrate, whilst crossing the line his car collided with the engine. The impact was not of a serious nature, as the ear was expected to be ready for u--o again to-day Mr. "Bob" Cameron, who was enjoying a ride, fared worse, as. he shows cigns of contact with some obstruction. . GENERAL. The tea-rooms on Saturday were controlled by Mrs. Freer, and the mart by Mesdames Paynter and F.'M. Thompson, the latter realising £l2 fls. Included in this was C2 15s, proceeds of the sale of a pet lamb donated by Mrs. 0. Curtis and auctioned by Mr. Pugh. Trains are running late, and this is not surprising when one notes the volume of traffic. As in the past, New Plymouth is drawing heavily on this district for temporary residents at the seaside. The WhanNt train this after noon brought a tew hundred people here. biH the wind and rain made it anything but pleasant for those shopping and | otherwise.
