Destroyers surprised submarines which were half-submerged and intently watching for their prey, but they did not notice the destroyers approach. One submarine was rammed and sank immediately, and a destroyer shelled and smashed the conning tower of the second, the crew abandoning the submarine ARMED STEAMER SUNK. 101 LIVES LOST. Wellington, Last Night. The High Commissioner reports from London, under date Dec. 22, 3.50 p.m.: The Admiralty reports that the armed boarding steamer named Stephen Fnriiess was submarined and sunk in the Irish Channel, and that 101 officers and men were lost. LOSS OF CHATEAU RENAULT. DETAILS OF THE FIGHT. Received Dec. 23, 5.5 p.m. Paris, Dec.. 21. The Chateau Renault was torpedoed in the lonian Sea. The torpedo struck the vessel on the starboard side, and the engine rooms filled with water. The submarine reappeared on the port side, and fired a second torpedo while the troops and crew were entering the boats. The Chateau Renault's gunners shelled the submarine. The torpedocrs joined in the fight, hitting the submarino, which sank head foremost. Twenty-two Germans, including the captain, were rescued.
