STRATFORD.

COMPLAINTS OF MISREPORTING. At the County Council meeting on Saturday Cr. Buskin complained that he had been misreported in some remarks lie had made at the election of the chairman. Public men have mostly themselves to blame if their words are misconstrued. For many reasons Cr. Baskin himself in addressing thu Council rarely gives the reporters the 'benefit of a frontal view, and to take his words is no easy task. Others again seem to think that the bettor plan"is to speak in almost, a whisper and with a pipe going in full blast. They know what they are going to say, but frequently the actual words are not very enlightening, but spoken in a reasonable tone and clearly one can obtain the meaning. What, adds to the trouble is that frequently others are carrying on a conversation at the same time. Again there are some Councillors who do not rise when they speak. Out of courtesy to the chairman and as a convenience to the penmen a man should stand up when he has anything to say, and on finishing take his seat. If Councillors would observe these small points there would be no fear of any pearls of wisdom not reaching the public. BOROUGH COUNCIL. The Borough Council meets this evenin"'. The following reports will be considered:— Borough Engineer (Mr. T. D. Sullivan). —Rcmetalling Opunake road from Broadway to Western boundary has been completed. Footpaths in virions poritions of the borough have received, attention. All (ire plugs have been inspected. Everything is Working splendidly at the head works. There i.s quite as much water overflowing at the inlet to the cast-iron main as tne main is capable of conveying to the town, so that in the event of a fire the main must always 'be full at the intake. A small scour at the weir will have to be put right and I estimate the cost at £ls.

The Works Committee stated they had visited the proposed site for a bridge over the Patea river, and recommended that Ariel street is the better place for a foot bridge, the cost being less and position more convenient. Re Mr. Rawson's request for footpath and drainage they recommended that the path he extended as requested, but owing to the cost cannot extend the sewer.

The Lighing Committee reported that, the Railway Department advised that in some places where the borough electric lines cross the railway they are not in conformity with the regulations, and the committee recommend that this matter be attended to as early as possible. The committee also approve of the picture company's request that they be charged a flat rate for current consumed in the new theatre, and that 5d p»r unit he charged for all purposes. They suggested that a street light he placed in Miranda street south, Father Maples having agreed to pay ."is per month for the light opposite the church. To prevent a shortage of oil, the committee suggested that another 25 barrels of oil should be ordered at one", and that four 400-gallon tanks he secured for storage purposes. Re successor to electrical engineer 36 applications had been received, but the committee was not yet in a position to report. When ready they suggested a special meeting to consider the question. The electrical engineer (W. .1. Newton) reported: During the month great trouble has been caused through shortage of water for the hydro station and fuel for the/Diesel station. Oil secured from Flawera and Taranaki oil wells helped matters somewhat, and since then -25 casks of shale, some five months on order, have arrived, but as things are at present this will not last long. Owing to castings not. arriving "lie street lighting extensions in Broadway have not been completed. The motor' installed at the model dairy farm has been placed in, but after the men left an attempt was made by someone not properly instructed to start the .motor, and blew the transformer fuse and put the motor out of commission, but to what extent I am not able to say. Re report on motor and cost of power for crushing metal, as T am on the loth of next month leaving the Coun"il's service. I think if is very much better to leave my successor unfettered by any opinions that I may express in this matter, seeing that he', and not. myself, will he in charge: if he desires it I shall be only too plcaseS to afford him any assistance mv experieneo will allow.

There has been a steady demand for the seasonable gifts on sale at C. E. James' jewellery warehouse. The stock available for selection is easily thr best procurable in Taranaki, and patrons from all parts of the province arc participating in the good things. A word to the wise, inspect C. E.
