WESTOWN SCHOOL CONCERT.
The first annual concert in connection with tlio Wcatown Seliool was held in ■the Wcstown 'Hall on Thursday night and proved very .successful, the hall being too small to accommodate the audience. The programme submitted by the children was a very bright one, the costuming of the little ones being particularly good and reflecting great credit on the teachers (Misses 'Delivers and Eayers) tt-ho had arranged and designed the dresses. The spectacular effects were also very good, especially in the opening item, nursery songs by the children in character, the prettily decorated stage being occupied by the friends of our nursery days, who each enacted their parts. Tfee fairy scene was very prettily designed and carried out, as was also the song "Two Little Honey Bees," and the conoiuding item, "Fine Weather Clothes," a humorous item by the boys. Reoitations were contributed by Sydney 'fonks, Olive Autridge, Thelma Sadler.' Alice Garcia, Edith Garcia, Fred Pans Stellar Autridge; dialogue, Thelma Sadler and Alice Garcia; songs. Ivy Sadler, Masters Edwards, Styles and Coad. Miss Den vers played all the accompaniments and also a pianoforte selection. Mr. W, 11. Broome rendered a song very pleasingly, whilst Mr. Gadd gave some splendid banjo selections, being encored. During an interval Mr. J. Garcia, who presided, introduced the visitors, and Mr. Lister, chairman of the Franklcy Committee, of which Westown is a side school, addressed (lie parents, urging them to take more interest in school committee elections. He also read the inspector's report, which wa's a very satisfactory one, ana called on Mr. Masters to present the <.iVfj Before presenting < ii little one with a prize, Mr. Masters congratulated residents on having secured a school, which, judging by 'the concert, ho characterised as a particularly good one. He also gave some homely advice to tbe children, impressing on them the necessity for being loyal to their teachers. Mr. T. B. Winfleld also 'briefly addressed the parents and stressed the conscientious work of the teachers of the side school. v Mr. P. White in his remarks prophesied that it would not be many years before the district had a structure worthy of the a scfhool, though he pointed out that it was not the building that counted for everything in the education of a child. / At tho conclusion, thanks were accorded the teachers, parents, performers.
